BA 520 DB REPLIES wk 6
Instructions:
Start a new thread in the discussion topic to respond to this week’s discussion
question(s). Remember, there are two parts to the discussion: 1) your response to
the question and, 2) your participation (replying to classmate threads).
Main Post:
All students will be required to actively participate in the discussion boards. Students are required to
respond initially to the discussion board question by initiating an original thread by Wednesday.
Main posts should also integrate our learning by using a sound academic reference to support and
provide evidence of learning.
Engagement:
Students are expected to contribute to the discussion on a minimum of three different days while
the discussion board is active. In order for all of us to benefit from the active participation of all
members of the class you are required to post on a minimum of three days while the discussion board
is active. Try to post early in the week, mid-week and late in the week. By spreading out these
postings we should have a lively and interesting discussion for the entire week .
Peer Posts
While the DB is active, you also want to respond to a minimum of two of your
classmates’ original threads (replies to peers to your own original thread do not fulfill the peer
response requirement). Your response should be substantive and either expands upon the original
thread or critique the original thread. Be sure to reference your opinions and comments. The
responses should be substantive not just “great point, nice job, way to go.”
These discussions are an opportunity for you to demonstrate your scholarly approach to the course
materials and your ability to think critically about the question and the material itself.
Discussion:
1. Imagine you are a hired consultant and have been asked to review your local police
department’s training program. There have been reports of excessive force being used, what
are some of the things you will look for or want to review? Explain why.
2. Discuss the value and importance of training for an organization in terms of sustainability. Be sure
to provide evidence and examples to support your thoughts.

1. Please select ONE of the questions below to
answer:
•
Do you believe that it is possible to ask people to serve as mentors or
become mentees? Why?
•
Many companies actually systematize the mentor program, so that requesting
a mentor is a less daunting experience. New employees without a structure in
place for mentoring may have to initiate a mentor relationship since both
senior men and senior women in organizations are reluctant to step forward
to offer their assistance as a mentor.
•
Why do recently retired people need to be prepared for the differences
between work and retirement?
•
Certainly, not all Gen Xers, baby boomers, or Generation Ys want the same
things from a career. What generation are you in, and what do you want in
terms of a career? Should organizations be concerned about dual-career
issues such as career conflict, relocation, and differences in salary? Why?
In your answers please draw from your own professional experience and
provide examples from your own life, either as a leader, helper, employee, or
observer. Review the reading, draw from your own ideas, examples or
experience– and conduct some additional research as needed.
At the Master’s level we look for responses that include citations of
information from the textbook or other journal articles to support your
position. Consider the questions carefully; respond the question clearly, and
provide additional information to support opinions. While you don’t have to
cite every answer with the textbook or other reference, most of the time you
will for full credit.
POSTING REQUIREMENTS:
You are expected to 1 main thread and 1 reply post. (Each post is worth 20
points).
For a quality post, discussion posts should be at least 250 words per
question…for higher point value questions, more work and analysis should be
provided! Student responses should provide a good platform for sharing
ideas and helping each other expand on the topics.
2. Please select ONE of the questions below to
answer:
•
What conditions in the workplace are most likely to
trigger a union organizing campaign?
•
Describe the representation campaign from
authorization cards through certification of the
union. How can unions be decertified?
•
Compare and contrast labor organizations in the
public sector to those in the private sector.
•
Describe the current trends in union membership
and union organizing.
•
Describe collective bargaining- What major
functions does this process perform in
organizations? What is a bargaining unit? How does
the NLRB determine if it is appropriate?

BA 520 REPLIES
Gabrielle-Based on real events, I would look back on those who may have
reports of using excessive force. From there I would see what kind of
situations they were in when excessive force was used. If it tends to be
a similar situation every time it has been used, is there training that can
be done to show how to properly act in a situation like this? If there are
multiple types of situations when excessive force is being used, is there
training that may need to be done company-wide to change how they
react to situations? Looking at the leaders may be beneficial as well. If
they have a record of using excessive force, it could be happening more
than it should be due to no repercussions happening.
An efficient way of looking into excessive for within a police
department is looking at reports the citizens make and matching them
up with the reports the police have already filed. Most of the time,
reports that are made from citizens have already been reported by the
officer themselves. Officers are required to report them right away to
allow for adequate time to gather all information and facts needed to
incase a citizen does file a complaint, they will be able to compare the
situations and get it resolved in a timely manner. When these are not
reported immediately it ends up being a longer process if the
information has not been found when the citizen complaint comes in
which can be a bad look for the department and chief. Overall, having
too much information on any situation is beneficial and this could be
information worth looking into to see what needs to be changed or if
more training may be needed.

Brittany-As a consultant doing a review of a training program with the local police, I
would first start my investigation by looking into the actual training program itself and to see
how proper procedures are supposed to be within the police force and then investigate the de escalation protocol. With the training program itself I would want to know if the learning
objectives are being met and being effective in the field at using appropriate force with
dealing with a lot of criminals out there. The next area I would investigate would be the body
camera footage from the officers who have had complaints made against them to see if the
proper conduct is being exhibited in the field. I would then investigate the number of
complaints before training and then after if available, as this would be the determining factor
if the training is effective in producing the intended outcome or not (Noe, 2019). As any
evaluation after a training program has been conducted, it should determine if the learning
objectives have been met and to see the intended outcome reached. In this case it would be to
see if a there is a change in the number of complaints the department has received prior to
training and the number of complaints after training was completed. If there were not enough
information to justify the training methods used, then changes would need to be made or not.

Lisa-As a consultant, the first step would be to assess the needs of the
department. A plan would then be created to address these needs
followed by training to help develop a successful result. Lastly, an
evaluation of the training would need to be completed to create an audit
of the developed plan.
In the assessment, some of the issues that could be addressed would
include concerns from the department expressed about citizen oversight.
Possible assertions such as citizens interfering in police work. In this case
it’s important to take accountability for disciplinary actions to prevent
misconduct. Another assessment may be some citizens not
understanding police work. Perhaps some officers do not have the same
level of experiences and react on emotions rather than training. Lastly,
some may perceive the processes is unfair, for example staff may have an
“agenda” or are biased (police and citizens alike). This may need an
external audit team to review complaints and findings as some cases have
an outcome of being undecided or reduced in favor of unfounded.
From these findings, the consultant should create a plan of action for
monitoring and evaluation. This plan could create special training for
officers learning not to react with emotions. Create procedure and
update policies that may need adjustments. Creating mediation or an
early warning system or even an outreach program where citizens can
have free coffee with cops to better the relationships between each
other.
The delivery of additional training could be classes taken online or in a
formal classroom setting. Perhaps more soft skills such as how to
communicate better or other interpersonal skills could be introduced for
bot citizens and officers. Finally, transparency of evaluating the success
of the training could be made public. At 6 months or a year from the
training and development plan, data such as types of reports, contents,
frequency, disruption or disciplinary actions could be addressed in the
evaluation.

Oluw- Why do recently retired people need to be prepared for the differences
between work and retirement?
Working for the rest of one’s life might be exhausting, therefore at some point, one
must retire. For each individual, retirement has a unique meaning. It is enjoyed in various
ways by various people. Retirement plans differ according to socioeconomic status.
Retirement can be considered as a period of relaxation and productivity, allowing people to
reconnect with their social spirits while also receiving and providing assistance to others their
own age. Previously, retirement was delayed until later in life, resulting in a loss of physical
vigor.
However, the retirement age is expected to drop in the coming years, providing people
more time and energy to engage in social and spiritual activities. When a person chooses to
leave the workforce permanently, this is referred to as retirement. The average retirement age
is 65 years old. Different types of benefit systems and pension schemes exist to enhance the
income of retirees.
Retired persons will have to deal with a slew of challenges after they leave the
workforce. Some retired people may suffer from a lack of social interactions and connections.
Some people may face financial difficulties as well as healthcare needs that are difficult to
meet. If they are not prepared for retirement, all of these difficulties will cause stress and
negatively impact their mental and physical health. Retirement planning is crucial because it
can prevent you from running out of money in your golden years. Your strategy can help you
figure out how much risk you should take with your investments, as well as how much money
you can safely pull from your portfolio.
It is critical to plan for retirement by creating goals in order to have a happy
retirement. Retired persons can adjust to the era by creating a new budget, building social
friendships, and scheduling time and duties.

Kaitlyn- Recently retired people need to be prepared for the differences between work and retirement
because it can be a big switch for people that have gotten used to a routine and have worked the
majority of their life. The switch can really throw people out of the loop and they have to figure out
what to do with all these free time on their hands.
Through some research, I found something that surprised me. Social Security and the office of
retirement and disability policy found that those of a lower socioeconomic status usually retire earlier
than those who are living in a higher socioeconomic status. I also found that many people that are
thinking about retiring, often have an idea of what their retired life may look like. I feel as though many
people glamourize retirement and think it is full of tropical vacations and cocktails on the beach. But,
this is not the case for most people. This forecasting of retirement can sometimes be tough on mental
health for those transitioning from working life to retirement life. (Knoll, 2011)
Knoll also writes about how the thought of retirement is bittersweet for most people. It is a
phase of life that usually means one is getting older. Those who have enjoyed working for the majority
of their lives, may have a fear that they only boredom will come out of their retirement, that they won’t
know what to do with their new-found free time. They may also believe that they won’t get the social
interaction they received while working. (Knoll, 2011)
All of these things that soon to be retirees might think about are real and we should be
concerned with how retirement is thought about. My mom recently retired, and she couldn’t be
happier. She was lucky that it took her only a month or so to adjust. She gets to do the things she wants
and when she wants to do them. It was interesting to see the research that has been put into the
decisions, thoughts, and emotions people go through when thinking about retirement and is important
to ensure we have support for those who are working through it.
