Behind the Beautiful Forevers:
The physical border is the wall that separates Annawadi from Mumbai. Nonphysical border: Rich vs
poor.
The idea of the juxtaposition between the wealthy and the poor: We start off with Boo wanting to know
what it really is like to be poor in a place that’s prospering. We see in Mumbai all of this wealth and
opportunity being created but at the same time, we see dire poverty and so we see the juxtaposition
between wealth and poverty. This juxtaposition is maintained by the wall, and so in wealthier
communities, the way we deal with poverty and inequality is by building walls so we don’t have to see
the inequality or recognize the struggles of those living in poverty.
The aspect of corruption and how the characters in the book use it to get ahead as it’s the only way to
succeed.
The Devil’s Highway:
Physical border: The Mexican border. Also talk about the non-physical border in the book.
The notion of Borders.
In an attempt to militarize the borders, we kind of forget the humanity of these immigrants which brings
to another theme, which is the notion of borders and what they do and their impact.
