English 113 – Instructions Assignment (15%)
Due: July 19, 7p.m.
(rubric and instructions courtesy of M. Law)
Write concise and coherent instructions for a specific process. You have some flexibility in
choosing your instructions topic. However, there are some constraints:
•
•
•
The process must be able to be performed by one person
No recipes/cooking processes
Nothing requiring gas or electric powered tools or other potentially dangerous equipment
The process you use must have at least 5 steps to describe. It is expected that you write these
instructions from scratch. That means you are not allowed to use websites or books as a
reference/template for your own instructions; however, you can look at instructions for different
processes. Any graphics you use (drawings, photos, etc.) must be created by you.
The instructions should adhere to professional guidelines: use correct, precise language. Your
assignment will be marked on the following elements:
•
•
•
•
•
Language – each sentence must express a clear, well-articulated thought and be
grammatically and punctually correct.
Structure – the document should provide all necessary elements (e.g. Introduction,
Technical Background or Theory, Warnings, Equipment/Supplies, Step Names, Steps).
Organization – each step should be limited to one action.
Design – the reader should be able to successfully navigate the document. Consider
readability: use headings, white space, lists, etc. as discussed to help your reader.
Usability – a reader should be able to successfully complete the process by following the
instructions.
