Philip Morris International (PMI) is a leading global tobacco corporation headquartered
in New York, United States. It has an employee base of more than 69,000 individuals who
come from different parts of the world while its market value amounted to approximately USD
$159.2 billion in 2021 (Tocabo Tactics, 2022). The firm exercises significant devotion to
eradicating smoking and establishing a sturdy firm in medicine and wellbeing while devising
financially sound measures to benefit society. This suggests modifying the corporation to meet
the changing societal demands. Thus, the literature review is about how Philip Morris can
implement technology to help address the smoking problem.
PMI has operated as an organization that specializes in tobacco for many years.
However, the different changes witnessed in the world have led the company to embark on
immense transitions. PMI’s shift from a tobacco company to one that specializes in electronic
products has altered how it operates in almost each aspect, requiring the firm to embark on a
significant organizational transformation (Legg et al., 2019). Fostering an effective
transformation process has resulted in PMI shifting its business into one that relies on data and
advancements in science and technology. Starting 2008, the corporation has invested a total of
USD $8.1 billion to support the development of smoke-free products, undertake product and
commercial research and development, streamline production capacity, and substantiate its
products scientifically (Elias et al., 2018). However, the change endeavors by the company
have faced challenges, especially the immense costs attributed to facilitating the switch, raising
awareness regarding its new products, and declined revenue to abandonment of its primary
business segment.
PMI’s focus on smoke-free products depicts an innovation that caters to the overall
wellbeing of society. The firm anticipates its smoke-free products to account for over 50
percent of the revenues it generates by 2025 (PMI, 2021). Innovations, such as IQOs, a leading
tobacco product by the company, will prevent people from developing serious health conditions
that come from using tobacco products. The initiative will also result in reduced environmental
implications, further contributing to a healthier society for both smokers and nonsmokers
(Dewhirst, 2021). Moreover, the organization remains devoted to organizing and engaging its
workforce during the transformation process to boost their lives as well. PMI has remained
committed to building and developing its people from within. Thus, when it comes to employee
engagement matters, the company’s transformation efforts touch its entire backbone (Tocabo
Tactics, 2022). Nonetheless, certain challenges exist, such as unwillingness of employees to
support change by PMI due to uncertainty with the company’s future success without
developing tobacco products. Also, the move will hurt tobacco producers who sell their
products to the company to earn a living.
The adoption of a technology that will facilitate the production of smoke-free products
by PMI will ensure the company contributes to overall wellbeing of society and improve health
of consumers. The revenue generated from the company after adopting the technology will
support various social and economic activities in society (Legg et al., 2019). In this vein, PMI
would need to seek support of civil society and regulatory bodies to ensure it continues to
support the growing needs of smokers in a healthy manner.
