Persuasive Source-Based Essay
A source-based persuasive essay differs from the other essays in tone and in purpose. Its tone is
often more serious or academic depending on the subject. Its purpose is to take and support a
position on a multi-sided issue. The persuasive paper should address an issue outside the
immediate experience of the writer, in other words, this issue is one that REQUIRES research.
Essentially, this persuasive paper is the next step in your essay writing experience. This essay
requires that you take a side. You are STRONGLY DISCOURAGED against being neutral.
ASSIGNMENT:
You should begin with a research QUESTION. The reason that I ENCOURAGE you to
start with a research question is so that you conduct objective research that ultimately and
fairly arrives at a conclusion.

The essay will ultimately be a minimum of four to six full pages; this does not count the
Works Cited page.
You are required to use a minimum of three sources for this essay. Two of these sources
need to be found using the MVCC databases. One of the sources needs to be an article
from a scholarly journal.

Neither first or second person should be used in this essay.
The essay, in-text citations, and the Works Cited page should follow the rules in the MLA
8th edition.

TIPS:
Use a strong claim that can be easily identified by your reader. Remember, it is your goal to
persuade your reader. What information will be necessary to give to your reader? What might
your reader need to know? How do you need to present this information in order to reach the
expected outcome?
Be sure the ideas controlling your paper are your own; in other words, don’t plagiarize your
sources. We will talk more about using sources and incorporating them using MLA style. Use the
sources in the form of direct quotation, paraphrase and summary to support your ideas.
If you are using information that is over three lines in length, make sure that you make it a block
quote. Everything that is not your own (directly quoted or not) must be cited within the text of your
paper. Don’t forget to include a Works Cited page and to make certain that this is on a page of its
own. The sources listed on the Works Cited page are alphabetized.
This assignment must be typed, double-spaced, use one-inch margins, have a title, use either
Times New Roman 12pt. font or Arial 10pt. font, and submitted on Canvas. All citations MUST
follow MLA format. I will submit these essays to the College’s plagiarism tool, and you will receive a
plagiarism report
