Guidelines for Research Proposal
OVERVIEW
Your task is to design an experiment to test an interesting topic about human
cognition. Take a topic from this course: you can elaborate on an existing study or
design a completely new one. You might want to select a topic that is directly related
to your field of study.
You are not expected to implement the study, but you will need to explain how you
would analyze your data and discuss possible outcomes and their implications.
The proposal should be 15-20 pages, double-spaced, APA journal format. The
proposal is due on Sunday of the last week of class.
PRELIMINARY WORK
Research Prospectus
To help you develop your ideas and evaluate your proposed design, you will write a
research prospectus that will contain the following elements: a) a description of the
proposed study; b) a description of study design (independent and dependent
variables, proposed statistical methods); and 3) your research question and
hypothesis.
You will submit this prospectus in the discussion board area in your peer review
group. You will need to review your classmates’ work and provide comments, then
revise your prospectus based on the comments given to you, and submit as part of
Unit 11 assignments.
Annotated Bibliography
As part of Unit 11, you will submit an annotated bibliography for the research
proposal. The bibliography should contain the following:
a. At least 6-7 sources from peer-reviewed journals
b. Brief descriptions of what each source is about (1-2 sentences)
Research Proposal Presentation
As part of Unit 13, you will post your proposal presentation on the discussion forum.
The presentation should contain all major points from your proposal, even though
your proposal might still be work in progress. The purpose of these presentations is
to demonstrate your work and receive feedback from your classmates and
instructor before you submit the final version of the proposal.

COMPONENTS OF THE PROPOSAL
Abstract
Very briefly, in 1-2 paragraphs describe the study: concepts under investigation,
research design and methods, and projected results.
Introduction
This is your review of relevant literature. You should already have a clear
hypothesis in mind, but you shouldn’t reveal it from the very beginning. Start with
summarizing relevant research to set the context for your study. Make sure you use
in-text citations extensively and direct quotes sparingly. Analysis of concepts should
conclude with the explanation why the proposed study will be interesting and
significant. Your justification should be based on existing research rather than a
personal opinion. Avoid using first person pronouns such as “I†and “we.†Then
outline the purpose of your study, research questions and hypotheses. Since this is a
research proposal, the introduction is your most important section.
Methods
This section should be subdivided into Participants (describe the number of
participants, demographics, and how they will recruited); Design (describe the
exact experimental design, independent and dependent variables, and how variables
will be manipulated); and Materials and Procedures (describe materials provided
to participants and what will happen during the experimental session from start to
finish).
Results
Describe the comparisons in your data that are necessary for testing your
hypothesis: identify statistical methods and expected outcomes.

Discussion
Describe possible outcomes of your study, including both predicted and unpredicted
ones, and how they can be interpreted. Discuss how these findings can be applied in
your field. Relate this section to your literature review and use in-text citations.
Finish with conclusions that summarize the important aspects of your study.
References
References should be from both the textbook and peer-reviewed articles. References
from magazines, newspapers, and Wikipedia are not acceptable sources. All
references should be in APA format.
