Description

Tips for selecting a topic

Target a specific audience, even if you are writing from a hypothetical position.

The narrower your audience, the narrower the scope and focus of the report will be. For example, instead of writing to “SJSU” on effective ways to adapt

new county guidelines for COVID (Links to an external site.)

, write to a smaller establishment, e.g., a small business, daycare, or gym.

Choose a context you are familiar with the topic

Once you has chosen a topic targeting a specific audience, you can begin dividing the tasks and outlining your report.

The

work plan

is the first stage of the assignment and will help you “map out” the project.

Analytical Report Work Plan: Work From Home Policy at IZBC Inc.

Statement of the Opportunity:

Example: (Because of COVID-19, most people are forced to work from home. While many people find it difficult to adapt to sudden changes in their working style, they are not entirely without benefits. Since working from home, our pets have received maximum companionship and care. We save a lot of transportation time and fuel costs. But as the epidemic eases and vaccines become more widely available, many will soon be back at work, or have already been. We plan to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of Work From Home)

Scope and Limitations:

Example: (We are preparing this report because as more and more people get vaccinated, our lives will eventually go back to the way it was before the pandemic. However, for people who are already used to working remotely, it’s going to be a huge challenge to switch back. We want to analyze how the work from home policy applies to IZBC Inc. )

Analytical Report Work Plan: Homelessness in Downtown San Jose
By Student A and Student B
Statement of the Problem
The presence of homelessness has continued to increase in downtown San Jose. It is an issue
that should be addressed more actively. Aside from the unfortunate effects on the individual,
homelessness impacts the city’s sanitation, the safety of San Jose State University students,
and tourist impressions.
Purpose
The purpose of the upcoming report is to analyze the effects homelessness has in downtown
San Jose, and propose a few solutions with the primary focus of community safety.
Scope and Limitations
We are preparing this report because the presence of homelessness affects downtown San
Jose businesses, institutions, including the thousands of students who commute to the SJSU
campus. The report will only focus on promoting safety within the downtown San Jose
community; it will not cover solutions to address local homelessness.
Sources and Method of Data Collection
We will collect sources from the SJSU library database, reliable online articles, and viewpoints
of authority figures. Our sources will support the potential solutions, and referencing authority
figures’ viewpoints will provide credible insights.
Background
As the homeless population increased in the 1980s, homelessness became more common in
the U.S. (The Way Home, 2017). Any person is classified as “homeless” if he or she can’t afford
basic shelter due to inadequate income or unemployment. According to the Downtown
Association, “San Jose’s homeless population has increased by 42 percent to 6,172, according
to January’s homeless census, mandated by the Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) and taken every two years” (2020).
Audience Analysis
Our target audience for this report will be the Office of the Mayor, Sam Liccardo in San Jose.
