Description

The Teenage Years
In addition to addressing CLOs 1 & 5 and PLO 2, this assignment is designed to help students “recognize physiological,
social/cultural, and psychological influences on their well-being” (Area E GELO 1).
For this assignment, you will consider the physiological, social-cultural, and psychological factors that influence
development throughout adolescence. By providing an in-depth analysis of one particular milestone you will also
have the chance to understand, from a developmental science point of view, how a salient experience can help
shape your growth and development over a period of time.
Review the major developmental milestones that emerge over the course of adolescence in the table
provided and address each of the questions below:
[IN GENERAL, NOT YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE…]
1. Identify one major developmental milestone (from one of the domains) that typically emerges over the
course of adolescence from the table below.
a) Using at least 3-4 full sentences, drawing on material covered in the textbook and/or lecture,
elaborate on this description.
How would you describe this milestone? What does this milestone “look like” in teens? Be sure to
provide specific examples to support your point.
b) Using at least 3-4 full sentences, explain why this milestone falls under the domain listed. How or
why is this milestone related to the domain under which it is listed? Be sure to provide specific examples to
support your point.
Choose ONE Milestone from one of the Domains listed.

contexts are described in the table below).
Be sure to make meaningful connections to material discussed in text and/or lecture in your answer.
Sociocultural Contributions and Consequences…
Physical

healthcare may lower the
age of pubertal onset in the
general population.
Diets high in fat contribute
to obesity and further lower
pubertal onset.

Social
/Emotional
Emergence of various
forms of reasoning and
problem-solving skills is
highly variable across
cultures.
