Overview
Before you begin
In this simulation, you will isolate DNA
from a fresh filtrate of strawberries.
DNA exists in all cells but is housed
inside the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
In order to extract it, associated
proteins and membranes must be
removed
Keeping all reagents cold in this
simulation protects the DNA from
breakage.
The filtrate is created by
homogenizing the berries with
detergent to emulsify membrane lipids
and proteins inside the cells, releasing
DNA into the solution.
DNA is released by cell lysis in a
sodium chloride solution that makes
the DNA more readily condense when
later exposed to alcohol.

Addition of cold ethanol will cause a
precipitate to form, and a spooling
technique will be used to physically
collect the DNA strands onto a glass
rod.
Cold ethanol causes DNA to
precipitate (solidify and become
visible) while preserving fragile
hydrogen bonds, thus preventing
damage to the strands.
