Final Exam Explanation
Critical Thinking
Spring Semester 2022
Prof. Wesley Thorne
The final exam will be a debate.
There will be two people in each debate.
You will be given a motion at 12:30 PM the day before the scheduled
debate.
The motions are different for each day. Monday’s motion will not be the
same motion as Wednesday’s motion and so on.
Example: If you are scheduled to debate on Monday. Motions will be
released on Sunday at 5:45 PM. You will be assigned sides on this same
day. The motions and sides will be released on the LMS. If your name is
not on that schedule, then you are not debating.
You will be assigned government or opposition.
Government PM Speech: 4 to 5 Minutes
Opposition Leader Speech: 4 to 5 Minutes
Government Whip Speech: 3 Minutes
Opposition Whip Speech: 3 Minutes
You will have a 15 second grace period after time has elapsed. After which,
I will have to cut you off. This is due to time constraints.
Government PM Speech: 4 to 5 Minutes
Task: Define the motion. What do some of the more ambiguous terms
mean?
If this is a THW motion:
What is the government going to do exactly?
If this is a THBT motion:
What exactly does the government believe?
Present 2-3 well defined arguments that support the motion.
Opposition Leader Speech: 4 to 5 Minutes
Refute what the government said.
If this is a THW motion:
Answer the question, why is the government’s plan a bad idea?
If this is a THBT motion:
Why is the government wrong?
Present 2-3 well defined arguments that refute the motion.
Government Whip Speech: 3 Minutes
Refute your opponents’ arguments. Remember that in a debate if you don’t
challenge an argument it automatically succeeds.
Clarify your arguments.
Explain why you think you won.
Do not present new arguments.
Opposition Whip Speech 3 Minutes
Refute your opponents’ arguments. Remember that in a debate if you don’t
challenge an argument it automatically succeeds.
Clarify your arguments.
