As part of campus writing assessments, you will submit one major writing project, along with a description of the assignment for that project and thoughtful responses to four questions about your writing as part of this Writing Intensive course.

To submit your materials, you should attach the following files to this assignment: 1) a copy of the assignment instructions, 2) a thoughtful self-analysis based on the four writing process questions below, and 3) a copy of your final project submitted as a Word document or PDF.

Writing Process Questions:

What aspects of your writing in the project are effective and why do you think they are effective? Please be specific: for example, rather than saying “I used good examples,” identify one or two examples that you used and explain why these examples are good ones.

What do you think could be improved in your written project and how could it be improved? Again, please be specific. Rather than saying that, for example, your organization could be stronger, say what you might do to make it stronger.

Briefly describe the process you used to write the project. Do you think the process you used was effective? Why or why not? Please consider not only the research that you conducted (if applicable) but also any planning, drafting, and revising that you did.

Have you applied anything that you learned in previous WI courses, including English 1100 and 2201(or the equivalent if taken at another institution), to the writing that you have done in this course? What have you applied and how have you applied it?

Let’s imagine Mattel has hired our class as a consulting team to help them improve their
international expansion. They are interested in whether or not a different tactical approach
would be best. Put on your consulting hat, select the three most appropriate tactics (e.g.,
licensing, Franchising, JV, etc.) covered in Chapter 7, and explain to the Mattel leadership
the strengths and weaknesses of each. Which one do you ultimately recommend?
Mattel could use several tactics as alternatives to compete in the international market.
These tactics include Franchising, joint venture, and licensing. Each of these strategies is
associated with various strengths and weaknesses. However, among the three international
competition tactics, joint ventures seems to be the most advantageous.
Strengths and weaknesses of licensing
For instance, licensing does not require the licensee to contribute funds or be present in
the international market (Helen, 2012). With licensing, there is the capacity to make money
through preexisting property rights through royalties. However, licensing is suitable for
competing in the market with a high-risk aversion. On the contrary, the profits are typically
lower than other entrance tactics. And it’s hard to track how the authorized product would be
Strengths and weaknesses of Franchising
Franchising would enable Mattel to explore new markets that are unfair to its business
models (Helen, 2012). Depending on the country Mattel decided to expand, Franchising will
allow it to take advantage of clear government guidelines in that country. However, Franchising
is affected by cultural differences, which limits the expansion of the business. Mattel will also
likely face financial risks due to varied currency exchange rates. In addition, the company will
face challenges in branding, regulatory variation, and customer relations.
Strengths and weaknesses of Joint Ventures
Joint ventures will enable Mattel to expand its market and develop new distribution
channels internationally (Gayathree, 2017). However, the joint ventures will offer new means of
entering new markets and allow Mattel to enter new markets more effectively and economically
and quickly access international resources. However, the way of interactivity among partners is
poor. The combined venture’s members have different expectations. There is a disparity in terms
of competence and expenditure. Labor and funds are not evenly allocated.
Among the three international completion strategies (Helen, 2012), I would recommend
joint ventures. Joint ventures will enable Mattel to access global markets more efficiently and
economically. In addition, Mattel will access resources from different countries easily. Joint
ventures will also provide new distribution channels for their goods. In addition, joint ventures
will enhance knowledge about the local markets and local production methods. Furthermore, the
joint ventures may also help Mattel win government contacts.

It helps maintain the brand’s strength. Despite having a costly process of designing products, the

enhancing and maintaining its image. Thus, its productivity remains unharmed.
On the other hand, different companies find it challenging to manage their growth

market. In most cases, demand reduces as the company grows, and Yeti manages its growth by
introducing new products that meet consumer needs (Trnavsky, 2020). Introducing new products
enables Yeti to continue selling and keeping growth in the competitive market. It also uses the
available resource to conduct significant investigations on effective ways of designing and
developing new products. Also, it focuses on enhancing its existing products to help meet
consumer desires.
Additionally, the company focuses on increasing effectively to reduce operating expenses
and maintain its productivity. It is because the management always concentrates accurately on
the company’s growth rate and operations. During forecasting, the administration helps meet
new markets and design and market all new products to their geographies. However, their
approaches may not be effective in forecasting the future.
