Textual Evaluation
People adjust their writing according to many factors. These adjustments are intentional
shifts people make to their writing so that it communicates an intention to the audience across a
space. A space is essentially anywhere where people write. This could be a paper to a teacher or
a digital messaging board. Spaces can influence people’s writing immensely. Informal and
formal writing are used in certain spaces as apposed to others. For example, informal writing will
most likely to used to comment on a friend’s social media post because of the space being a
place to just unwind and connect with friends. Audience also causes intentional shifts in writing
across a space. For example, commenting on a friend’s social media post will be laxer and more
informal because it is a person that is familiar. Lastly, a person’s intention in their writing
influences intentional shifts. For example, a person may increase their use of academic
vocabulary in a paper because their main intention in writing a paper is to get a good grade. The
moves or shifts themselves can be identified in numerous ways. For example, a move called code
switching entails a person changing their writing to a style that adapts to a new space, audience
or intention. Code meshing would be combing styles to adapt. Three writing samples that show
these characteristics are Discord messaging, Canvas discussion, and a written goodbye letter. All
these spaces exhibit the need for intentional shifts among the writers.
Discord messaging between two friends contains a multitude of intentional shifts. There
will be a switch to informal language most likely because of the space and the audience.

Informal language is common when communicating to a friend online. Also, Discord is a
relatively lax environment that would encourage informal writing over formal writing. The
intentions concerning this space and environment can vary greatly but can be summarized into
the following categories: reinforcing the relationship, silliness, learning new things. Usually,
writing to a person, especially a friend, over a digital space can offer a lot of opportunities for
emotional support or venting. This support usually strengthens a friendship overall. Friends can
also write to each to each other over messaging to be silly or simply to learn new things they
might be interested in. Of course, the audience being a friend can a huge impact on the
intentional shifts. If a friend is closer to someone, they can usually write with less need to filter
out their thoughts and simply be more of themselves. Usually, a new friend would require more
filtering of words because the relationship isn’t incredibly strong yet. Overall, the moves here
manifest as the following: deletion/filtering of words, insertion of jokes, insertion of things of
interest in the conversation.
The next writing sample is a Canvas discussion board for a class. The writing itself here
is formal. All the factors here point to same moves overall. The space itself is academic and used
primarily for grading purposes which causes the writer to switch to formal language. The
audience is the person grading the written discussions. This person is usually a teacher’s assistant
or a professor. The audience causes the writer to add more academic diction and stylize the
comments further because of the eventual grading process. The intention here is a achieve a good
grade on these graded discussions. All the moves done by the writer here are similar in the sense
that they all are academic shifts. However, if the writer is interested in the topic of discussion,
they might mesh together slightly informal phrases that show their interest with highly academic
expectations. The need to add more academic diction and syntax may vary on the circumstances

usually due to the audience. A person may be laxer but still scholarly in their writing if they
know the person grading their work has relatively lax expectations. In contrast, harsh graders
will create a need to be more scholarly in terms of a person’s writing.
The last writing sample is a specific type of letter to a friend. This letter is a goodbye
letter and differs highly to causal messaging/writing to a friend. Due to the serious nature of the
letter, the language used here will be formal. Also, the diction itself will be a more somber mood
as it is saying goodbye. The audience can influence how formal and how somber the diction will
ultimately be. If a friend is very close, the letter will be more on the informal side as there is a
closer relationship but will remain formal to some degree. The amount of somber words will
probably increase due to close nature of the friendship. The formal language usually increases as
the friendships are less intense/close. The intentions here are usually to say a proper goodbye and
create a reminder of lasting memories that will be referenced as the person moves forward. The
moves here can be summarized as: somber connotations with certain words, relatively formal
language, and careful word choice to elicit memories.
Overall, intentional shifts made by writers are influenced by audience, intention, and the
space concerning the actual writing. In Discord messaging, there are shifts made by the writer to
accommodate the lax environment and friendship developing there. Also, the intentions cause for
omission of words and code switching to preserve the friendship. In Canvas discussion, there are
mostly academic shifts made by the writer to adapt to the academic environment. The intention
of getting a good grade based on the writing mainly drives the writer to use formal language and
academic diction. Since the audience is a professor or a teacher’s assistant, the need for scholarly
emphasis in a person’s writing increases. In a goodbye letter to a friend, the language here is
presented as degrees of formality. A closer friendship allows more room for informal language.

Since it is saying goodbye, there will be words of a sadder connotation presented here. There is
an intention here of saying a proper goodbye and trying to remain in the friend’s memories. The
notion of proper goodbyes creates a need for some sort of formality. Also, the desire to remain
close to someone in their mind influences the writer to use certain words over others. In
conclusion, intentional shifts are utilized by writers as tools to adapt to certain circumstances.
