Water Pollution in New York City Lab Simulation Assignment
(Prepared by Dr Jingyu Wang of BCC)
Combined sewerage overflows (CSOs) is the major
water pollution sources in New York City Rivers. A
combined sewer overflow (CSO) is the discharge from
a combined sewer system that is caused by snowmelt
or stormwater runoff. Combined Sewers are sewer
systems that collect stormwater runoff, domestic sewage, and industrial
wastewater in the same pipe and bring it to the wastewater treatment facility.
Stormwater and sewage share the same pipe, during the dry day, the combined
sewers transport both wastewater and stormwater runoff to wastewater
treatment plants (WWTPs). Heavy rainfall can overload these combined sewers,
which can exceed the wastewater treatment plant capacity, consequently, a
combined sewer overflows or CSOs discharge excess untreated sewage mixed
stormwater runoff directly into the river without any form of treatment, causing
elevated nutrients and bacteria levels, degraded water quality and environmental
ecosystems, as well as threatening fish consumption safety in the river. There is a
CSO in the Harlem River on the site of Roberto Clemente State Park. The following
diagram shows the hydrological cycle of NYC.

Objective
This lab is going to use riverkeeper’s data on the two sampling sites in the Harlem
River (Willis Ave Bridge and Washington Bridge) to analyze water quality
Two sampling sites are:
1. Harlem River Willis Ave Bridge
2. Harlem River Washington Bridge
Compare the water quality parameters of Enterococcus, Temp, Salinity,
Chlorophyll, Turbidity, Oxygen in the two sampling sites.
Experimental Material

Reading: Wang, 2014. Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) impact on water quality
and environmental ecosystem in the Harlem River
https://www.scirp.org/pdf/JEP_2014103010434271.pdf
1. Go to the RiverKeeper website
www.riverkeeper.org
2. Select the “Water quality” tab,
3. Select Hudson River estuary data
4. Choose New York City, Hudson County & Bergen county sites
5. Choose Harlem River-Willis Ave. Bridge
6. Choose Physical/Chemical data tab
7. Please choose the Sample Date from 06/12/2017 to 10/08/2019, and enter the
following data in Table 1:
• Enterococcus
• Temp
• Salinity
• Chlorophyll
• Turbidity
• Oxygen
8. Repeat Steps 1 – Step 7 for the second location: Harlem River-Washington
Bridge and enter the data in Table 2:
9. For the data table produce the following Excel line graphs:
10.
Make the following Excel line graphs for Table 1 (Harlem River-Willis Av
Bridge)
Enterococcus vs Date
Temp vs Date
Salinity vs Date
Chlorophyll vs Date
Turbidity vs Date
Oxygen vs Date
11. Make the following Excel line graphs for Table 2 (Harlem River-Was Bridge)
Enterococcus vs Date
Temp vs Date
Salinity vs Date
Chlorophyll vs Date
Turbidity vs Date
Oxygen vs Date
12. Write a one-page summary (Times New Roman, 12pt font, double space)
comparing the water quality data of the two locations
13. Submit the one-page summary, the two data tables (Table 1 and Table 2) and
the 12 graphs as one Microsoft Word or pdf file on your Blackboard course
site.
