Re-read the following scene, in which Proctor decides his fate.
RIP
(His breast heaving, his eyes staring, Proctor tears the paper and
crumples it, and he is weeping in fury, but erect.)
DANFORTH: Marshall
PARRIS (hysterically, as though the tearing paper were his life): Proctor,
Proctor!
HALE: Man, you will hang! You cannot!
PROCTOR (his eyes full of tears): I can. And there’s your first marvel, that I
can. You have made your magic now, for now I do think I see some shred
of good-ness in John Proctor. Not enough to weave a banner with, but
white enough to keep it from such dogs. (Elizabeth, in a burst of terror,
rushes to him and weeps against his hand.) Give them no tear! Tears
pleasure them! Show honor now, show a stony heart and sink them with
it! (He has lifted her, and kisses her now with great passion.)
REBECCA: Let you fear nothing! Another judgment waits us all!
RIP Proctor! In order to lament Proctor’s death and explore Miller’s purpose in ending the play with his
death, you will write a eulogy or elegy for Proctor.
→ EULOGY: a speech (usually given at a funeral) that remembers and praises a deceased person
→ ELEGY: a poem that laments/memorializes a deceased person
Before you begin, you need to do some pre-thinking and pre-writing to make sure your obituary,
eulogy, or elegy truly represents Proctor and reveals the purpose of his death. Consider the following

→ ELEGY: a poem that laments/memorializes a deceased person
Before you begin, you need to do some pre-thinking and pre-writing to make sure your obituary,
eulogy, or elegy truly represents Proctor and reveals the purpose of his death. Consider the following
questions:
Why does Proctor decide to rip up his confession and die for what he believes in
What does Proctor's death show the rest of Salem?
What does Proctor's death mecn to his wife, Elizabeth
a Does Proctor die with "goodness?" Does he redeem himself from his sins?
How has Proctor changed throughout the play, and what does his death reveal about his
character development?
What could Proctor's death representa
Why do you think Miller decided to end the play with Proctor's death
How does Proctor's death connect to the themes of "The Crucible?"
How does Proctor's death connect Miller's purpose in writing "The Crucible?"
You do not have to explicitly answer all of these in your eulogy or elegy; however, you should
demonstrate your understanding of the purpose of Proctor's death. Go beyond mere
comprehension to truly analyze why Proctor dies at the end of this play and what Miller is trying to
show the audience through Proctor's death.
