The APRN consensus model provides guidance to states to create a unity in the regulation of the various APRN roles. This consists of specific requirements such as certification, education, and scope of practice of the specific role (NCSBN,2020). The three regulatory bodies that follow this model are the American Nurses Association (ANA), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). The ANA focuses on nurses working in a safe environment and maintaining high standards in nursing practice. The NCSBN acts as a nursing and public health regulatory. This organization focuses on nursing safety, public health, and welfare issues. The ANCC allows nurses to be certified in various nursing specialties. These regulatory bodies provide nurses to maintain their scope of practice.
An Informatics Nurse develops communication and technology to improve patient care. According to the ANA this specialty uses nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data in nursing practice (Barker & DeNisco. 2016). The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) is a group that is committed in nursing and informatics practice. The goal of this organization is to advance nursing informatics through education, research, and practice in various settings (ANIA, 2020).
Certain criteria need to be met to be certified in nursing informatics. According to the ANCC the individual must have an active RN license and practiced as a RN for a full two years. In addition, one must hold a baccalaureate or higher degree in nursing that is relevant to the field. One must complete 30 hours of education in informatics within three years. One must complete one of the three options for practice hour requirements. First option is to complete a minimum of 2000 hours in informatics of nursing within the last three years. Next, is to complete a minimum of 1000 hours in informatics of nursing in the last three years and must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours of academic credits in informatics that are part of the graduate level. Lastly, is to complete a graduate program in nursing informatics which contains a minimum of 200 hours of faculty-supervised practicum in informatics (Barker & DeNisco. 2016). The vigorous practice hours will mold the nurse and enlighten the nurse on how to use technology to enhance patient care.
