Asian Health Services has a mission to advocate for immigrant or refugee Asian
community and their rights to health, and access to health care services. Because of their mission
statement it makes serving the people of their community and giving them the care, they need
can become a problem for the organization. One of the biggest issues is enhancing the efforts to
better serve their community and adding bilingual staff to their organization. Lack of funding is
one problem they have and without funding they can’t pay providers, nurses, and other medical
staff. Adding more funding to their nonprofit organization that would allow for new services to
be added for the community. Their funding became an issue when the Affordable Care Act was
enacted because it affected their budgeting with the new programs. A few other challenges would
be the community constantly changing and some of the residents aging meaning that they need
more care and then you have new refuges coming into the community as well. Then you have to
think about the challenge of recruiting and retaining new doctors, nurses, and nurse practitioners.
As a result of these issues the Asian Health Services recognized that their patients should come
first and that giving the community the right resources were important to fixing these problems.
When it comes to adding bilingual staff to AHS the healthcare managers would be able to
provide a list of at least the top five different languages the staff would need to speak. This
would help narrow the list of bilingual employees to just the most needed and would save on
budgeting for their staffing. Healthcare managers can help build new programs for AHS that
would best impact the community. As healthcare managers they know what their patients need
and in which ways their health can be improved. These new services will benefit the community
but could also increase AHS’s funding from the government to run these new programs. In terms
of the ACA healthcare mangers need to make sure their departments are trained properly on the
EMR systems. This will allow for better charting, better reimbursement, and make sure that AHS

is complying with all government guidelines for the ACA. When it comes to retaining and
recruiting new staff healthcare managers play a key role in making this happen. When healthcare
managers don’t listen to their employees it decreases productivity but when healthcare managers
care and are involved the opposite happens. Healthcare managers need to hold weekly meeting
with their staff to keep updated on things happing inside their department. Having a healthcare
manger that involves themselves with their department helps them to work better as a team and
creates better communication for the department.
Some of the key stakeholders of AHS include staff members like doctors, nurses, nurse
practitioners, and other staff members. Some other stakeholders are the senior management team
and an external stakeholder are the patients and the community as a whole. Stakeholders have an
impact on the strategic planning process of any given organization. AHS have several internal
and external stakeholders meaning that each group of stakeholders have different expectations
from the organization. Their influence happens when it comes to changing policies or developing
new ones. Not all stakeholders will have the same interest in all of the policies or changes being
made by AHS. My recommendation for encouraging key stakeholders to be involved when it
comes to driving the strategic plan is to make sure we offer an array of services this way
stakeholders have an interest in some part of AHS. I don’t think many of the stakeholders will
have an interest in everything that AHS do but the more they offer then the more stakeholders
they will draw in. Holding open meetings that allow all key stakeholders to attend is another way
to get them involved in old and developing policies that will affect them. As long as we meet
some of their expectations then they will stay interested and involved when it comes to AHS’s
strategic planning process.

I believe that the Asian Health Services is doing a great job at aligning their strategic
planning and policies when it comes to their overall mission and vision. Their mission is “To
serve and advocate for the medically underserved, which includes the refugee and immigrant
Asian community, and to make sure equal access is given regardless of income, language,
insurance status, or culture” (Asian Health Services, 2017). They take their community needs
into consideration when it comes to almost all of their policies. For instance, they employed
bilingual staff to help communicate with their patients better. Doing this has also improved
quality care for patients and makes them feel more comfortable receiving care from AHS. They
have also found ways to increase funding while also providing more services to their community.
Although with every strategic plan there is room for improvement or changes to make things
better. If I had to make a recommendation, I would suggest that AHS create a department of case
managers. These case managers would have hands on contact with patients of AHS and they
would know best what patients need and how to better serve their community. They could then
relay this information to the AHS board with monthly meetings to discuss what changes need to
be made for their community. I think that employing case managers would also cause for better
communication between AHS and their community that they have prided themselves on taking
care of.
