In the era of COVID-19 and other illnesses, there has been extensive focus on ways to reduce the spread
of illnesses. One of the ways to reduce the spread is reducing or eliminating the touching of your face
(mouth, nose, eyes, etc.). We would like to develop an intervention to reduce the amount of times that
we touch our faces; however, we first need to assess how often we touch our faces before the
intervention implementation (baseline).
In this assignment you need to collect data to determine how often you touch your own face. You will
develop a measurement procedure and conduct your baseline assessment. Your observation should
take place over at least one day and at least five data points (e.g., intervals, time points, outcomes, etc.).
Make sure to include the following in your assessment.

An Operational Definition of the Behavior
•
A description of the environment in which the observation occurred
•
Which measurement method you chose and why (e.g., event recording, partial interval, whole
interval, momentary time sampling, permanent product, etc.)
•
The data collection sheet you created and the raw data collected
•
A summary of your findings
•
A discussion on how generalizable your findings are
Now:
In the measurement assignment we collected baseline data to determine how often we touch our
faces. Now imagine that you have developed a new school-based intervention that helps elementary
school students to reduce the amount of face touching that occurs in the classroom. You would like to
assess the effectiveness of this intervention utilizing one of the designs discussed in this module.
In this assignment you need to develop an experimental design that you think you will most accurately
assess the effectiveness (or non-effectiveness) of your intervention. Make sure to include the following
in your experimental design plan.

A clear plan of how many data points will be collected (more than 3)
A clear description of what each data point represents
Define what the y- and x-axes of your graphed data would reflect
