Research Proposal on Screen addiction
1. What is your topic?
My research topic will be screen addiction among children.
2. Why are you interested in this topic?
I am 25 years old and live in Oklahoma with my husband. I have three siblings- two
brothers and one sister. On some occasions, my parents send them to come visit me and
sometimes I go stay with them at my parent’s place. Whenever I am around them, I realize
that they are always on their smartphones, watching television or playing video games. This
makes me believe that they are addicted to their screens. Therefore, I would like to do some
research on screen addiction in order to know its effects on them and how I can help them
stop feeding their addiction. I know one of the effects of screen addiction is low
concentration levels on important things. But I would like to know more effects that screen
addiction has on people, especially children. I would also like to find out about the solutions.
One of the solutions may be to take away their devices before bedtime, but I believe there are
better solutions that will help them.
3. What is the literature behind this topic?
Addiction can defined as an unhealthy dependency on something. According to
Neurohealth Associates, there has been an increase of evidence to exhibit these addictive
behaviors. Although people of all ages can be victims of screen addiction, Neurohealth
Associates state that an increase in screen addiction in children is due to several reasons
including unregulated screen time and easy access to devices (Neurohealth Associates,
2020). Neophytou, et al., states that “excessive smartphone use may increase the risk of
cognitive, behavioral, and emotional disorders in adolescents and young adults that also has
the potential to increase the risk of early onset dementia in late adulthood.” In an article titled
Psychological Impacts of “screen time” and “green time” for Children and Adolescents: A
Systematic Scoping Review by Tassia K. Oswald, Alice Rumbold, Sophie Kedzior & Moore
Vivienne, it stated that with the increase in technological developments, there has been an
increase in young people’s engagement with screen-based technologies which has resulted in
a decrease of the young people’s contact with nature. However, with proper supervision and
other measures put in place, one can stop their screen addiction.
4. What is your thesis statement?
According to Aric Sigman, screen addiction can be reduced through parental monitoring,
exercising, and establishing discretionary screen time (DST) limits (Sigman, 2017).

Reread your research topic. Make sure the paper clearly responds to the research question.
Revise and edit your paper as you go beginning from the final thought in the conclusion
paragraph all the way to up to the hook.
Revise word choice. Vary them to make them interesting for your readers.
Revise sentence structures and sentence variety. The practice on Coordination, Subordination
and Sentence starters will be useful.
Revise pronoun usage. Make sure that pronouns were not written meaninglessly all over the
paper. Limit the use of first and third person pronouns and use them only to enhance clarity. Do
not pepper the paper with “I’s” and “We’s.” But you don’t have to rigidly avoid the first person
either. Avoid the use of second person (you, your, and yours).
Give your research paper a good, effective title.
Avoid terms like “firstly,” “secondly” and so on. Avoid phrases such as “To conclude,” “In
summary,” or “In conclusion.” Avoid declaration statements such as “Today I am going to talk
about” or “In this paper, I will write about.” Using these will only weaken your essay.
Conclude your paper by leaving your reader with a final thought, a call for action, a powerful
quote, and so on.
