RESEARCH NOTES
Research is the information we gather from reading, watching, and listening to sources like, but not limited to,
websites, newspapers, academic journals, podcasts, documentaries, and interviews. Research is needed and used
to answer questions, to explain why something is true, to spread and discover new ideas, and to make decisions.
Some assignments in school and at work require little research but some require a lot. A successful writer uses
strategies to keep the research organized and to ensure it is current, relevant, accurate, has authority, and its
purpose is to be objective. A successful writer also knows, to use research in writing, requires APA in-text citations
and references. To do these things, a successful writer uses Research Notes to record the research that will be
used in his or her work.

The currency of the information is up to date since the minimum wage in Ontario hasn’t changed since 2018,
when this article was written. The information is relevant to knowing about the historical context of the
minimum wage issue. The author, as the director of research for ON Federation of Labour, has the
qualifications and credentials (authority) to write on this topic. The article has an objective purpose and
accurate view of historical records regarding minimum wage in Ontario. The research proves that minimum
wage is a highly debatable issue and that increases to minimum wage should match inflation.
