professor remarks and critiques

: Make sure to center your titles and they are not in bold. I do not see a research question here so you did not do the title page . You have to have a research question because that’s what gives you direction on what you’re going to discuss in your paper and keeps you focused. In that research question you have a particular population that you’re going to focus on and then you are also going to have a medical condition that you’re focusing on. So it looks like in your research question you’re going to use minorities as your population and I would say for your medical condition you could just do health outcomes because you kind of list an array of issues. In your last sentence of the second section say which increases the risk for a public health issue instead of chances of illness because then that will give you a good transition into your third section . Get rid of your last sentence in your third section you’ll be able to discuss the solutions in a different part of the paper.

Topic Description
In this paragraph you are going to define the terms in your chosen social or environmental
injustice. You need to include an explanation of the issue beyond a definition but keep it to about
5-7 lines. Use credible sources in this part because you cannot make up information. The
citation will go around the end of the paragraph when you are finished using information from
that source. Also, you need to write formally meaning NO PERSONAL PRONOUNS (we, our,
my or you). This is no place for personal opinions either so the word should or need cannot be
used. Look at my full list of words and phases in my Writing Style handout that makes your
writing juvenile (get/ing, a lot, huge, big to name a few). If you use them I will know you did not
look at the videos and are not participating in class. NO QUOTATIONS either. Information
needs to be paraphrased and cited correctly You are explaining what these topics are in an
unbiased way. Look at my example about the decline in bee populations and the peer review
rubric for guidance. They are both posted in the announcements.
Problem Statement
In this section you are going to define the problem by discussing the medical condition you have
in your research question. Also, include the population you are focusing on and why they are at a
particular disadvantaged. You also need to have a final sentence that will give you a smooth
transition into the next section. To do this it must include public health issue in it. Keep this
section around 5-7 lines as well. Same goes for the paragraph above too. Use credible sources in
this part because you cannot make up information. Also, you need to write formally meaning NO

Lack of Affordable Housing as a Public Health Issue
Topic Description
Housing is a fundamental basic need that promotes the wellbeing of people. The kind of housing
people live in determines their mental and physical health. Good public health is determined by
having homes that are free from harm, affordable and safe. Housing affordability is mainly
considered when a family can spend less than 30% of its total income on rent. Having limited
houses that are affordable limits individuals and families, from deciding where to live. This may
result in some families living in unsafe areas that are crowded and have fewer healthcare
resources. Lack of affordable housing may cause homelessness, which shows the unequal
distribution of resources and opportunities. The problem of lack of affordable housing affects the
ability of families to meet essential needs. Children in such areas experience serious health
problems. According to the American Public Health Association, affordable housing is crucial in
promoting good health and raising healthy communities (Ganesh, 2016).
Problem Statement
Families that cannot access affordable housing may develop health problems due to poor and
unsafe areas. They may develop respiratory diseases and nutritional health problems due to poor
feeding habits. The populations that are mainly at risk are the minority and the poor people in
most communities. The poor people are disadvantaged because they are jobless people who are
unable to raise good money to get decent houses that are affordable to them. In most cases, the
homes the poor people afford are in slums where the standard of living is inferior and prone to
serious health problems. Poor housing conditions are associated with many health concerns,
including injuries and even mental health (Ganesh, 2016). Therefore, the lack of affordable

housing is a serious health issue since it means the spending on essential like food and receiving
health care is less, which increases the chances of illnesses.
Purpose of the Topic
Public health is defined as the art and science of preventing disease and prolonging people’s lives
by improving the standard of living in communities (Resnick, 2018). It deals with population
health as a whole. Approaching a public health issue is very important since it improves health
among people by collecting information on the causes of specific health issues. Also, it helps to
detect the changes in the health care practice. It helps in keeping the communities healthy. The
purpose of this paper is to present evidence that approaching the problem of lack of affordable
housing from public health perspective would decrease respiratory disorders, injuries, and
nutritional health problems among the poor and minority populations. This will lead to
developing affordable housing for all people despite their economic status in the community.
