MGF 1106 PROJECT #3 – CONDITIONAL PROBABILITY
This project is designed to help you gain a better understanding of Conditional Probability. We encourage you
to go the math lab if you need help completing it.
STEP 1 (IN CLASS)
Within your group, decide on a yes/no question (for example, like a particular show on Netflix/does not like
that show, like Cuban food/does not like Cuban food) that you would like to ask to see if there is a difference
in responses based on a criterion you decide (examples are above 20 years of age /not above 20 years of age,
Grew up in Miami/did not grow up in Miami etc). Bring your question up to your instructor for approval.
STEP 2 ( INCLASS)
Survey at least 25 of your classmates, listing the data here. Make sure to keep track of your criterion as you
survey.
STEP 3(INCLASS)
Fill in the chart with your data. Be sure to fill in the category in the first row and criterion in the first column

STEP 4( Individual Work)
Let M be the event that the person surveyed belonged in the criterion (for example ‘grew up in Miami’) and
M’ be the event that the person surveyed did not belong in the criterion (for example ‘did not grow up in
Miami’)
Let A be your ‘yes’ question (for examples ‘likes Cuban food’) and A’ be your ‘no’ question.
Based on your survey, how would you say P(M|A) in words?
Calculate P(M|A):
How would you say P(M’|A) in words?
Calculate P(M’|A):
What does P(A|M) represent?
STEP 5 ( Individual Work)
Write a different conditional probability question based on the data you collected and calculate it.
STEP 6 ( Individual Work)
What did this project teach you about how to use conditional probability in real life and why it is relevant to
know?
All group members participated equally in this project. Signature________________________________
