Leadership Development Plan
Every organization requires their employees to be good leaders for the company’s
success. As a result, organizations develop leaders to shape them into beneficial leaders. They
achieve this by establishing a leadership development plan. A leadership development plan is a
strategy that enables workers to gain and acquire leadership competencies. The program also
prepares them for managerial and leadership duties in the organization. Employees at all levels
are trained on leadership skills that help them motivate, lead and guide workers towards
achieving success. Companies train leaders externally and internally. Internal training includes;
mentorship programs, while external training includes; conferences, seminars, and graduate
programs. Therefore, the paper aims to provide a brief background of the organization in which
LDP will be used, a description of the symptoms that suggest leadership development would
benefit the organization, the members, and become beneficial. Lastly, the leadership
development plan will discuss the benefits to the leaders developed. A leadership plan cannot
exist without introducing the organizational background.
The leadership development plan will review the operations of Walmart. Walmart is an
American company that operates as a chain store. Sam Walton establishes Walmart in 1962. The
company operates under transactional and transformational leadership styles to change the lives
of individuals and society. Walmart operates numerous supermarkets, hypermarkets, and
groceries, among others. Walmart conducts business through various chains, online, and in
physical locations. The company possess various symptoms that influences the need for a LDP.
Symptoms of Beneficial Leadership Development
A leadership development plan can benefit the organization and their members. The
following symptoms will indicate that the program is beneficial. First, the plan provides
improvement in leaders’ leadership skills. Every individual possess a certain attribute that makes
them stand out from others. A leadership development plan will entail developing and providing
the leaders with more skills to lead others and the organization. Therefore, an improvement in
their abilities suggests they will utilize the skills for the organization’s benefit. Second, leaders
will become more aware of their roles and responsibilities. This means they will pay much
attention to what they do as leaders and their responsibilities. With such knowledge, they will
perform tasks benefiting the organization.
Benefits of Leadership Development
First, leadership development contributes to better business results for the organization.
Various charts and graphs will pinpoint the increase in sales and financial performance. Good
leaders with the required skills to lead the organization towards the achievements of goals and
objectives will work towards achieving the organization’s goals. For instance, if the goal is to
increase sales, leaders will work towards increasing sales and achieving positive results. The
scripture also encourages the training of leaders to empower them to achieve good results. Luke
6:12-13 says, “Then he poured himself into them for the next three-and-half years, teaching them
privately and empowering them to do ministry. He wanted to be sure that when he left, they
would carry on his work as leaders for others to follow.” The Bible verse means that when
leaders are trained, positive results will be achieved. The scripture also encourages the training of
leaders to empower them to achieve good results.
The leadership plan improves overall financial performance by minimizing costs and
developing new revenue-generating methods. Through the development plan, leaders come up
with ways of conducting business. These methods reduce costs and increase revenues of the
organization. The increase in financial health creates a positive image. An organization led by
leaders with exemplary skills will likely portray an excellent impression to the general public and
the outside world. This action aids in the development of the reputation of the business. Leaders
represent the organization’s image; therefore, developed leaders will help build the name and
image of the organization they lead.
The second benefit is the resulting improvement in the company’s culture. Leadership
development improves the organization’s culture and teaches leaders what they need to know to
succeed. Flaig et al. (2020) believes, “They gain more knowledge of their roles and
responsibilities, which they utilize to perform tasksâ€. For example, leaders can devise ways of
engaging employees and motivating them. As a result, the plan improves the culture of the
organization (Flaig et al., 2020).
Another benefit is that leadership development will result in customer retention. The LDP
equips leaders with knowledge on how to lead the organization toward serving customers. For
example, through development, leaders can guide the rest of the workers. They will also lead by
example. Employees will copy their leaders’ unique communication skills, hence communicating
well with customers and serving them well. As a result, the organization will retain more
customers. Also, such conduct can attract more customers.
Benefits to Employees
The LDP improves employee morale. Leadership development motivates workers and
enhances their loyalty. For instance, when the organization trains and develops their workers to
become top leaders, employee’s morale increase, faith grow, and retention rates enhances. They
believe a time will come for them to be trained. This action motivates them to perform their work
well and increase morale. Leaders become eager to make sales goals in hope for a promotion in
the future. Additionally, the plan enables the organization to retain talented employees. Offering
development to leaders through training allows them to become the best version of themselves.
As a result, employees will stick with such an organization that adds value to their skills.
As positivity increase, productivity increases. Developed leaders become more
knowledgeable and innovative. Through this stage, the organization develops the capabilities to
improve the employees’ work and increase productivity. The leaders will be trained to
understand workers’ emotions. The leaders can utilize their emotions to empower and motivate
them. For instance, some workers may develop anger and sadness when performing work. As a
leader, encouraging and taking care of their emotions will help them improve because they will
be aware that their leaders care about their feelings and emotions.
Communication improves inside and outside the organization. The role of leaders is to
ensure the organization operates smoothly. With developed leaders, communication with
employees, customers, suppliers, and investors improves. For example, the plan provides the
leader with the effective knowledge of how to approach certain situations and communicate with
stakeholders. As a result, communication within the organization improves. With improved
communication, the leaders can easily achieve the organization’s goals.
Benefits to the Leaders
Leadership development will nurture leaders to become future leaders. Through
development, leaders will be nurtured to participate in more advanced leadership roles. The
developed leaders become specialized with the leadership skills to apply in various sectors of
leadership. Exodus 18:21 says, “But select capable men from all the people-men who fear God,
trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain and appoint them as officials over thousands of
hundreds, the fifties and tens.” The scripture requires able leaders to be selected to lead many
people. Hence, leadership development will help leaders lead others in the organization or as
The plan increases future leaders’ skills and empowers them more. The more leaders
receive training on leadership, the more they improve their skills. Such skills include
communication skills, leadership skills, and interpersonal skills. They also get more empowered
than before. Such skills help them solve problems in the organization and as future leaders. It
also helps them develop more confidence.
Lastly, leadership development equips leaders with skills to adapt to changes. With
changes in the market conditions, leaders receiving leadership development can adapt more
]-quickly than those without. The program equips leaders with knowledge on the path to
undertake in case of changes in the market conditions. Shufutinsky et al. (2020) states, “Warren
Bennis (2007) hypothesized that two of the primary threats to world stability were leadership in
the context of increased globalization and pandemics.†For example, when Covid-19 hit the
world, organizations with leadership development programs adapts faster to market changes than
others. Companies adapt to change because the development widens their thinking of possible
actions to take to adapt to a change. As a result, many leaders thought of conducting their
business online to adapt to the change (Shufutinsky et al., 2020).
Therefore, leadership development benefits everyone within the organization. The
organization improves its financial performance by minimizing costs and improving revenues
and a positive image. Communication both within and outside the organization is improved.
Leadership development programs help retain customers and attract more who want to be
recognized by a reputable business organization. To employees, it helps in keeping a talented
workforce and improves their morale. Lastly, leadership development benefits the leaders by
nurturing them to become future leaders and equipping them with additional skills. It helps them
to adapt faster in case of changes in market conditions. Hence, organizations should consider the
immense benefits of the leadership development plan and develop their leaders for the overall
benefit of the organization.
