• 20 – 24 points: Clearly summarizes major themes and details of the article, 5 to 6 sentences in 8 to 10 or more
paragraphs, 3 to 4 pages long. Quotes from article summarized are used with APA or MLA citation. Excellent
grammar and formatting.
• 15 – 19 points: Suitable summary of materials presented, 5 to 6 sentences in 7 to 8 paragraphs, not a full 3
pages long. Some type of reference citation is made. Satisfactory grammar and formatting.
• 10 – 14 points: Topic discussed, fair summary of material, 5 to 6 sentences in 4 to 5 paragraphs, a little over
2 pages long. Little to no details of the article are presented. Multiple grammar and formatting errors
throughout paper.
• 1-9 points: Topic discussed but not in logical or coherent fashion. Short, choppy sentences in 3 to 4
paragraphs, not longer than 1 page. Grammar or formatting errors throughout paper.
• 0: Failed instructions of the assignment or plagiarism of someone else’s work

Choose one of the four reading options found below for Extra Credit
• Please summarize the article’s main theme in full, including details that support the reading’s main
ideas.
Quoting and paraphrasing is encourage, however please cite using either APA or MLA
• Incorporating any other material that relates (such as other readings, class discussion, video) from
this American Ethnicity class or your own research is welcomed and encouraged
In order to receive 25 points extra credit to your Class Participation grade, the summary paper is to
be absolutely no less than 3 full pages.
• The more detail, the more points awarded.
• Please follow the basic format of an academic paper: standard 1†margins, double spaced, correct
spelling and grammar, STAPLED.
• Points will be taken off for grammar/spelling mistakes, formatting mistakes, lack of coherency or
lack of effort.
