Worksheet (20 points)
Following your reading assignments for this module, it is evident that science contributes to the knowledge base of the nursing disciplines. Evidence based practice is an approach to the delivery of healthcare that integrates evidence and patient care data with the expertise of nurses and patient preferences and values to generate quality patient outcomes. For the profession of nursing to utilize evidence based practices, research needs to support specific, effective interventions. This prevents nurses from providing routine care that is based on what has historically been done without concern for evidenced based practice and quality outcomes.
As noted in your readings, b
achelor’s degree prepared nurses can:
Read, interpret, and evaluate research for applicability to nursing practice
Identify nursing problems that need to be investigated
Participate in implementation of studies by assisting senior researchers in data collection
Disseminate research-based knowledge by sharing useful findings with colleagues
As you may know, in the recent past, the SMSU RN to BSN Program changed the requirements for the curriculum of the RN to BSN Program, removing statistics as a requirement. Before doing so, a literature review was performed, examining the latest expert recommendations for inclusion of statistics in undergraduate nursing education. Findings revealed that starting many years ago, research and statistics were a major focus of undergraduate nursing programs. The current focus has changed and is now to develop consumers of research, focusing on evidence-based practice. Research and statistics are not generally a strong focus for undergraduate nursing program, but rather a focus for graduate nursing programs. Thus, the emphasis of the SMSU RN to BSN Program is to build a strong foundation in critical thinking with an introduction to statistical literacy.
As a means to introduce statistical literacy to this course, in this module, using the assigned readings in the Prealgebra textbook, the statistical concepts of measures of central tendencies are covered. As noted in your readings, the ‘center’ of a set of data is used as a way of describing that data. This is an important concept to understand as you read and interpret research articles.
The two most widely used measures of the ‘center’ of data are the mean (average) and the median. As noted in your readings, to calculate the mean (let’s use an example of the mean average final grade for this course), I would add up all the final grades for all the students in this course and divide by the number of students in this course.
Now, to find the median final grade for this course, I would place the final grades in numerical order and find the number in the middle that splits the grades into two equal parts.
The mean (average) is the most common measure of the ‘center’ of data. However, the median is generally a better measure of the ‘center’ of the data when there are extreme values (outliers).
One other measure of the ‘center’ of the data is the mode. The mode is the most frequent value (in our above example, it would be the most frequent final grade in the course).
As consumers of literature, nurses need to be able to understand measures of central tendency as they interpret information surrounding evidence based practice. In your readings, Maracek and Anthony-Smith (2017) provide an opportunity to practice calculating means/medians/modes.
