You are encouraged to word process your assessment, although hand written
work is acceptable.
You are required to word process this assessment.
You are required to submit this assessment electronically through Blackboard.
√
Instructions
•
This assignment contains 5 questions / tasks.
•
Answer the questions / complete the tasks fully with all possible evidence for achieving
the learning outcome/s.
•
This assessment is worth 40 % of the module mark.
•
Your report should provide necessary citations and references. Referencing should be
done in Harvard Referencing System. Cross-referencing is to be followed, wherever
needed, failing to which mark will be deducted accordingly.
Please do not submit this assessment brief with your work.
Background:
You have already carried out / observed some activities in your laboratory session. Learning
through observation is an effective method in acquiring knowledge. Read the following
questions carefully under each task and present your work as directed.
By this time, you have completed three experiments in the laboratory. Those experiments are
listed down as an indication for you.
1. Gas law apparatus.
2. Heat transfer trough aluminium rod.
Task 1
You have performed an activity in the laboratory to demonstrate how the thermodynamic
variables such as Pressure, Volume and Temperature of a gas in an enclosure are
interdependent. Based on the data you have collected in your laboratory session, you are
expected to present a report as per the guidelines given below.
•
Briefly give a write up of the experiment demonstrated earlier. Your report should
contain the aim with the procedure of the experiment.
•
Tabulate your reading neatly in a column with proper units. Do necessary
calculations, if needed.
•
Plot a hand drawn graph between volume and pressure. Pressure should be on xaxis and volume on the y-axis. From the graph record the pressure in N/m2 when
volume is 20 ml. of air.
•
•
A scanned copy of the observation sheet used in the lab and the graph must be
attached along with your report.
Assume that the cylinder contains Hydrogen gas at the above volume and pressure.
Calculate the number of moles of Hydrogen gas using ideal gas law equation.
Task 2
You observed in the laboratory, how heat is transferred trough aluminium rod. Based on the
information you have collected in the laboratory, present a report as per the guidelines given.
•
Briefly give a write up of the experiment conducted. Your report should contain
the aim, procedure and results of the experiment.
•
A scanned copy of the observation sheet used in the lab must be attached along
with your report.
•
In 100 words write about the method of heat transfer in the Aluminium rod.
Task 3
Write a report on the topic “Melting Behaviour of Polymers during Burning”, need to
include the following points in the report, Introduction, brief introduction of polymer,
Discussion based on previous literature, mechanism, conclusion, references (1200-1400
words)
Task 4
Choose any cleaner, detergent or medicinal pack that show the chemical name of compounds
on it.
Study the label/s on any such packet/s available to you.
• Record any three minerals /compounds from the label/s you had chosen.
•
Calculate and record the number of moles present in 30 g of each mineral
/compound you selected.
•
Also, calculate the number of molecules in 30 g of each substance.
•
Present a photo print of the label you referred, preferably of postcard size 11.00
cm × 15.00 cm on normal paper. Your answer may become invalid if this photo is
missing in your report.
Task 5
•
Choose any two hydrocarbons one from alkane and other from alkyne family. The
hydrocarbon should have minimum 6 carbons in its molecule. Identify the type
and number of bonds in each molecule.
•
Calculate the number of moles in 150 g of first compound and 300 g of second
compound.
•
If 220 g of the alkyne you selected in the first case is undergoing stoichiometric
combustion calculate mass of CO2 produced in gm.
General Instructions:
•
All values and calculations should be in SI units, wherever applicable.
•
Collusion and plagiarism will be dealt seriously as per university rules.
•
All references, if any, should be in Harvard Referencing System. Cross-referencing is to
be followed.
•
Your answers should be self-explanatory and neatly presented.
•
There is no word limit but quality of your report fetches high marks.
