Create a brochure “hostile audience”
I will attach the directions below on how the brochure should look like
My topic is about social media and how might engineers help make social media more positive in society.
The brochure should be about what my topic is about
I will also attach what you should talk about in the brochure
the brochure should be a trifold brochure.
Criteria of Evaluation: Civic discourse brochure
Results:
Excellent:
Cover image and design would strongly appeal to intended reader; the intended readers
would “see themselves†in the image and recognize their situation in the title and/or
subheading
Overall structure of brochure is organized to tell a story that would be compelling to the
intended reader – a problem that is described in terms that make it significant to them,
a solution that they can adopt themselves, a “happy ending†in which they see their
lives or their community improved in a way that matters to them
Images in the brochure are thoughtfully chosen to appeal to the emotions of the
intended audience but avoid potential propaganda
Well-chosen evidence provides a compelling factual basis, including quantitative data
and testimonials from sources that would be compelling to the intended audience and
demonstrate that the solution is both supported by experts and by “ordinary†people
who would reflect people important in the reader’s own life.
Language demonstrates a strong and sympathetic understanding of important values
shared by the reader and writer and demonstrates how those values are relevant to the
action the reader is being asked to take; avoids jargon but doesn’t “talk down†to the
reader; explains any technical terms in ways that are comprehensible and make the
topic more compelling
Discussion demonstrates a strong and sympathetic understanding of the reasons the
reader objects to this action or idea and presents both data to demonstrate why that
objection can be set aside as well as language that shows that the action or idea is not
out of line with the reader’s values, providing a compelling counterargument to these
objections
At least one piece of visual data has been created for the brochure; it is clearly
presented and the evidence strongly supports the argument
Virtually no grammar or spelling errors that are inappropriate to the brochure format
(sentence fragments are acceptable in brochure format)
Good:
Cover image and design would appeal to intended reader; the intended readers would
“see themselves†in the image and the title and/or subheading clearly indicate the topic
Overall structure of brochure is organized to tell a story that would be reasonable to the
intended reader – a problem that is described in terms that make it significant to them,
a clear solution that they can adopt themselves, a “happy ending†in which they see
their lives or their community improved
Images in the brochure are a bit generic rather than chosen to appeal to the emotions of
the intended audience but avoid potential propaganda and are relevant to the topic
Appropriate evidence provides a reasonable factual basis; includes quantitative data
and testimonials from sources that the intended audience might not recognize but
would not reject, as well as from “ordinary†people who reflect people in the reader’s
own life though not with strong emotional importance.
Language demonstrates a reasonable understanding of important values shared by the
reader and writer and demonstrates how those values are relevant to the action the
reader is being asked to take; may have some jargon but doesn’t “talk down†to the
reader; explains any technical terms clearly
Discussion demonstrates a clear and fair-minded understanding of the reasons the
reader objects to this action or idea; presents both data to demonstrate why that
objection can be set aside as well as limited language that shows that the action or idea
is not out of line with the reader’s values, providing a reasonable counterargument to
these objections
At least one piece of visual data has been created for the brochure; it is clearly
presented and the evidence supports the argument
Few grammar or spelling errors that are inappropriate to the brochure format (sentence
fragments are acceptable in brochure format)
Acceptable:
Cover image and design would not appeal to intended reader but the title and/or
subheading clearly indicate the topic
Overall structure is clear but doesn’t really tell a story
Images in the brochure would not appeal to the intended reader but are appropriate to
the topic and avoid propaganda
Limited evidence provides little factual basis; may summarize evidence rather than give
specific details
Language demonstrates a limited understanding of readers’ values and focuses primarily
on the concerns of the writer; jargon is frequently used and left unexplained
Discussion demonstrates a limited understanding of the reasons the reader objects to
this action or idea; relies primarily on data to demonstrate why that objection can be set
aside, providing a factual counterargument to these objections
At least one piece of visual data has been created for the brochure but is not clearly
presented or evidence has little relevance to argument
Noticeable grammar or spelling errors that are not part of the brochure format
(sentence fragments are acceptable in brochure format)
Needs Work:
Cover image and design would not appeal to intended reader and the title and/or
subheading do not clearly indicate the topic
Overall structure is confusing
Images in the brochure would not appeal to the intended reader and may contain
elements of propaganda
Lack of any specific evidence provides no factual basis
Language demonstrates a disconnection between the values of the reader and the
writer: frequent and confusing use of unexplained jargon would alienate reader from
writer
Discussion demonstrates no acknowledgment that the reader objects to this action or
idea
Visual data is missing or has been directly copied from a source
Grammar or spelling errors that are not part of the brochure format often obscure
(sentence fragments are acceptable in brochure format)
My argument has been about social media and how might engineers help make social
media more positive in society. I would say that people who would be hostile about
making social media more positive are those who are jealous off of other people’s
success and those who cyberbully. These are the type of people that make social media
negative. People that use cyberbullying wouldn’t want to make social media positive
because they use social media to put others down.
Note: (include in the brochure)
Writing to cyberbullies would be a really good choice, I think. But that’s a pretty big group
— what kinds of characteristics might be shared by the particular people you want to
address? How old are they? Gender (it seems to me that more cyberbullies are male, but
that’s just sort of my impression not really “for sure” knowledge)? Regardng what kind of
topic do they engage in this kind of practice? why? what’s their socioeconomic and
educational status? those kinds of questions would help you choose strategies that would be
more effective because they’d be specific to your audience . . .
