VIDEO REVIEW PAPERS
DUE DATE: Wednesday, Dec. 2 by 11:59
General Statement: The purpose of this assignment is to get you to watch FOUR videos of various types of music and to
write ONE meaningful paper about your experiences. Remember, the paper that you will compose is worth 200 pts., so
make sure that you give yourself plenty of lead time in writing so that you can earn the best grade possible.
I.
Format
A. Length has to be a minimum of 1500 words – approximately 350 to 400 words for each video, but you
may choose to write more/less about a video as you wish.
B. Papers are to be typed in 12-point non-bold type, with a one-inch margin on both sides as well as on top
and bottom.
C. Double-space between lines for easier readability.
D. Do not use paragraph headings – work all information into sentence form.
E. Do not put extra spaces between paragraphs or major sections; rather, use appropriate wording to
establish a significant change in emphasis.
F. Include a title page with the event title, your name and word count.
G. Make sure that you use your computer’s spell check & grammar check before handing in your final draft.
H. Papers will be handed in via Blackboard.
II.
Content
A. Your paper should include a summary and critique of each video. You may choose to include some
information about the music (see #3 below), which can be researched online. You may use the handout
as a guide. This should not, however, be in place of discussing your own reactions to the music.
1. Make general music observations: number and types of instruments used.
2. Include specific musical observations: date of the compositions, historical period, and/or
information about the composer(s).
3. You may also want to include:
a. The composition (music & performance) you liked best.
b. The composition (music & performance) you liked the least.
4. Provide general reactions to the videos.
B. If using information from a source for background, avoid PLAGIARISM* at all costs!
IV.
V.
*Plagiarism – The bottom line is that I want to read YOUR thoughts and reactions to the videos that you
watch, not someone else’s!
A. You may “borrow” short sections (one to three sentences) from sources occasionally when writing your
paper
1. If you “borrow” material, make sure that it is acknowledged.
2. Please include all of your sources for information (if used) at the end of your paper.
B. Remember – it is very easy to copy material from the internet; however, it is also very easy for me to find
out if you’ve copied from the internet!
C. If you plagiarize, your paper will not count toward meeting the Gordon Rule requirements and you will
receive a failing grade!
Grading
A. Your grade will be based upon these three items:
1. 100 pts.: content (what you write)
2. 50 pts.: style (how you write it)
3. 50 pts.: watching three videos
