Introduction
I.
Background and Purpose
Fleming-Johnston-Mackay Communications Group provide an interconnective education
environment for student through online platform. To us, a reliable video sharing conference
tool would provide our teachers the best teaching environment and student the best learning
experience. However, Zoom, the application that we have been using, has stated to have
many issues regarding connectivity, lack of other communication feature, and a relatively
bad environment for education purposes. With many negative feedback from both teachers
and students, it has been decided that Zoom will be replace for a better, more suitable
application. This report evaluates and analyses several popular video sharing conference
tools as replacement for Zoom and their suitability for our system.
II.
Scope
In our research, we go through different conference tool currently used for business
purposes and narrow down to four applications with the best review and best education
application: Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, BlueJeans Virtual Meeting, Intermedia
AnyMeeting. In this report we analyze each application’s notable features and drawback.
Regarding education, we evaluate how the application can bring a welcoming teachinglearning environment, and connect teachers with their students. The new applications also
need to meet the current requirements as well as flexible to fulfill future requirement.
Criteria
1. High-definition video (HD video)
• The proposed solution must be capable of supporting high-definition video equal to or
above 720p resolution at 30fps for each member.
2. Moderative features and roles
• The proposed solution must include the ability to assign roles to attendees and control
audio/video input by a moderator. The moderator by default should be the call organizer,
as well as allowing the option to permit other members to moderate or present.
• Include options for removing features for attendees (live chat, screen sharing, video and
audio sharing), along with removing members and assigning breakout rooms.
3. Max capacity of user 500 people
• The proposed solution must allow for more than 500 individual attendees to join
the same call without dropping quality and call features.
4. Flexibility/Accessibility
• The proposed solution must be compatible with modern OS systems Windows, Mac OS,
Chrome OS, and Linux.
• A mobile app must include all features of the desktop version and be compatible across
Apple and Android devices (the oldest version allowed being Android 7.0 and IOS 8.0).
• Include settings to test audio and video before attending a call and the option to turn off
audio/video when the user desires.
5. Easily share information
• The proposed solution must make it easy for participants to share information
through screen sharing, breakout rooms, and live call chat.
• A Screen sharing tool to enable participants to stream programs in real-time in a
custom resolution (set in an options menu), up to 1080p.
• Implement an interactive mode that enables individual participants to go through
screen share material as it’s being presented live.
Discussion
Microsoft Teams:
Microsoft Teams is a platform for cooperation that makes use of persistent chat and has
various useful features for conversations in business or academia, such as document sharing and
online meetings.
Criteria1: High-definition video (HD video)
The Microsoft Teams will be a good choice for a new video conferencing system. The
video conferencing with full HD 1080p support. A smooth, consistent visual experience is
provided even with high packet loss thanks to AI-based video optimization that adjusts to network
conditions and bandwidth constraints. When the quality of the network suddenly degrades, it’s
important to have a seamless transition from Wi-Fi to cellular or vice versa. Teams can
automatically switch to a mobile data network while maintaining video and screen sharing. The
participants will continue the meeting without any disturbance (Aichner, 2022).
Criteria 2: Moderative features and roles
In Microsoft Teams, Moderative features and roles could be improved. Team owners may
enable moderation for a regular channel to manage who can submit new messages and react to
existing ones. In addition, it can add or remove channel moderators and set team member
permissions. This function prevents some participants who are not related to the channel from
speaking or modifying it, thus leading to unnecessary troubles (Microsoft, n.d.-b).
For the channel moderators can:
• In the channel, start new posts. In a channel when moderation is enabled, only moderators
have the ability to create new posts.
• Moderators can be added and removed from a channel. Keep in mind that team owners are
automatically channel moderators and cannot be fired.
• You may decide whether team members can respond to messages already in the channel as
well as whether bots and connectors can post messages.
As the meeting host, get to choose who enters your meetings formally and who must wait for an
entrance. The organizer and presenter can disable microphones or cameras for all attendees or
individuals at any time during the meeting (Microsoft, n.d.-a). Later if you want to enable the
microphone or camera for each participant, you can also turn on the permissions again as well as
video sharing, audio sharing and breakout room (Microsoft, n.d.-c).
Criteria 3: Max capacity of user 500 people
For Teams meeting user capacity, there may not be a way for Teams to reach 500 people, but
they have Live Events that you may want to consider. The maximum number of users currently is
300 people in one Teams meeting (Payne, 2022). In Microsoft Teams, for the feature number of
people in a video or audio call from chat, the maximum limit is 20 users. For those that only require
chat and call, the maximum limit is 1000 users. (Rowe, 2022b).
But in Microsoft Teams, there is a function called Teams lives events. The events are basically
a way for users in your organization to broadcast video and meeting content to a large online
audience. The event can support up to 20,000 attendees, and 50 events can be hosted
simultaneously across a tenant (Rowe, 2022b).
Criteria 4: Flexibility/Accessibility
For flexibility/accessibility criteria Teams support major platforms.
Temas supported platforms are shown Figure 1.1 below:

Criteria 5: Easily share information
For sharing information Microsoft Teams is still quite comprehensive (Desktop)
For the desktop you can share your screen in a meeting, select the share screen button
in your meeting controls. Available options are shown Figure1.2 below:

For the interactive mode, there is together mode in Teams. For this mode it actually doesn’t do
anything substantive, it just puts you in the same context as everyone else, sitting in the same
room or class meeting (Snodgrass, 2021).
Google Meet:
Google Meet is also one of the most popular video conferencing systems today. Google
Meeting can provide enterprise-level video conferencing to everyone, but there are limitations in
terms of time length and user capacity.
Criteria1: High-definition video (HD video)
Google Meet is supported High-definition video (HD video) during the meeting, but not up to
1080p resolution. The highest resolution for Google Meet is 720p resolution, the standard
definition is 360p resolution. In Google Meet the video resolution is dependent on your PC.
Supports 720 resolution on computers with quad-core CPUs or higher cores, as there will be the
ability to process more data and thus see a higher quality image on a high performance computer.
Only 360p resolution is supported on computers with less than quad-core CPUs, with a low
Performance computer will only be able to process less data and thus have lower image quality
(Google, n.d.-b).
Criteria 2: Moderative features and roles
For the Moderative features and roles Google Meet has many permissions.
With the help of administrator roles, Google Meetings allows you to provide one user
access to several different types of administrative positions. Administrators have access to data
and may perform actions through the Admin interface as defined by their job. Giving someone the
pre-built User Management Admin job, for instance, limits what user settings they may view and
modify for users who are not admins (Google, n.d.-a).
Admins feature: admins can disable automatic video conference links for all new Calendar
events. Also, admins can control who can join meetings in your domain and which meetings your
users may join (Google, n.d.-a).
For meeting hosts features: Google Meet supports adding up to 25 hosts to a meeting. The
meeting host can use: chat lock, present lock, audio lock, video lock, end meeting for everyone,
mute everyone (Vaid, 2021).
Criteria 3: Max capacity of user 500 people
For user capacity criteria, Google Meet might not be a good choice. The feature of capacity
user Google Meet is good but not excellent. Google has established a limit for each Google Meet
session. You may participate in meetings with up to 100 participants even if you don’t utilize G
Suite. The maximum number of attendees per meeting is 250 for subscribers of G Suite Essentials,
G Suite Business, G Suite Enterprise Essentials, G Suite Enterprise, and G Suite Enterprise for
Education (Ajaay, 2021).
Criteria 4: Flexibility/Accessibility
Google Meet actually is a browser-based application that may be used immediately. But if you
don’t use Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, you may miss out on some features. For instance,
even though both browsers allow virtual backdrops, while utilizing the same hardware, neither
Firefox nor Safari can access the environments (PCMag, 2022).
The supported operating system include:
• Apple macOS
• Microsoft Windows
• Chrome OS
• Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distributions
Note: Meet supports the current version and the 2 previous major releases of these operating
systems (Google, n.d.-c).
Criteria 5: Easily share information
For areas of easily shared information, the basic functionality of Google Meetings is complete.
Google Meet can easily share information through screen sharing, breakroom and live chat
(Google, n.d.-d).
• Screen sharing: You can present your entire screen or a specific window in a meeting.
While you present, you can share information such as documents, presentations,
spreadsheets, and more.
• Breakout rooms: Moderators can use breakout rooms to divide participants into smaller
groups during video calls. Breakout rooms must be started by moderators during a video
call on a computer. Breakout rooms currently can’t be live streamed or recorded .
• Live chat: You may share links and messages with video conference participants using
Google Meet’s chat function without saying them aloud. Prior to joining the Google Meet
session, you won’t be able to see any chat messages, and all communications vanish after
you exit the virtual conference (Montelli, 2020).
But it seems that for interactive features can not do too much, just basic function such as chat,
screen sharing, hand raising, polls, host controls and more
Intermedia AnyMeeting:
Intermedia AnyMeeting is a video conferencing service that has simple controls, good visuals,
AI transcriptions, and innovative whiteboard features to enhance your meetings or presentations
(PCMag, 2022c). But the Breakout room feature is missing in this video conferencing system.
Criteria1: High-definition video (HD video)
Intermedia AnyMeeting software could be a qualified software in terms of video. But Allow
up to 100 meeting participants to enable the camera during the meeting, once more than 20
participants enable the camera (or more than 12, if you are in optimized performance mode)
(Intermedia, n.d.).
The Webcam can reach 720p HD video conferencing with up to 30 webcams supported
(10 in Lite). If your desktop or internet is underperforming, you can manually trigger Optimize
Performance Mode during a session in the web browser by checking the Optimize Performance
Mode checkbox in the General settings. This will adjust the video quality and reduce the maximum
number of cameras per page from 20 to 12 (Intermedia, 2022).
Criteria 2: Moderative features and roles
Intermedia AnyMeeting’s moderator function is relatively straightforward and simple. You
may share the full screen or certain programmes, as well as turn on or off the microphone and
camera. The ability to silence other users, whether or not you are the administrator. It may be
switched off if things get out of hand, which is advantageous for meetings when someone is always
making background noise. It might be simpler to turn them off and alert them via chat at times
(PCMag, 2022b).
Removing live chat features for attendees may not be available. For removing screen
sharing, removing video and audio sharing functions is still possible (Intermedia, 2022b).
Criteria 3: Max capacity of user 500 people
For maximum user capacity the Intermedia AnyMeeting may not meet this criteria.
AnyMeeting support for a larger number of people video conferencing has only two plans, one is
the $ 12.99 Pro tier, and the other is the capacity of the number of people more 17.99 Enterprise
tier.
The Pro tier supports 100 web participants and up to 100 HD Video Participants, and offers
important features like end-to-end encryption, meeting recording, transcription, and meeting
security. An Enterprise tier is available that bumps the number of web participants to 200, but
doesn’t add much else. So the maximum number of people supported by this Intermedia
AnyMeeting is 200 participants (PCMag, 2022b).
Criteria 4: Flexibility/Accessibility
Intermedia Anymeeting offers a desktop application for attendees using. The Intermedia
AnyMeeting system requirements and supported desktop platforms (Intermedia, 2022a) :
• Windows 7 (64-bit) or higher / Mac OSX 10.8 or Linux / Ubuntu
• Broadband internet connection with an Upload and Download speed of 1Mbps or
more
Note: Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer web browsers as those browsers are unsupported on
our platform. Chrome and Edge browsers are supported if IT Policies do not allow you to install
applications .
For the Mobile Devices platforms:
• iPhone iOS version 13.0 or higher
• iPad iOS version 13.0 or higher
• Android OS version 7.0 or higher
Criteria 5: Easily share information
AnyMeeting has a screen sharing feature, but the screen sharing feature is available to all
participants in a meeting, not just the meeting host. In addition to this there is a multi-screen
sharing feature, which allows participants to share multiple screens at once (one screen per
participant) in the Intermedia AnyMeeting desktop application and Chrome browser (Intermedia,
2022c).
During a presentation, AnyMeeting’s annotation tool lets you annotate the screen. It’s a
good addition that it will automatically remove annotations after a certain amount of time to speed
up erasing time (PCMag, 2022c).
A whiteboard is included, in case you just need a blank space to show anything, there is a
whiteboard available. The distinguishing feature is that AnyMeeting enables the host to share the
keyboard and mouse with other attendees. Not every video conferencing tool can do this. But the
breakout room is missing in this software (PCMag, 2022c).
BlueJeans Virtual Meetings:
BlueJeans Meetings is a simple, and effective way for companies to access enterprise-grade
video calls with the support of high-definition Dolby audio. Users can connect instantly with
customers and coworkers on any mobile device, conference room system, or laptop (Carter,
2022).
Criteria1: High-definition video (HD video)
Bluejeans is quite compliant with the criteria for HD video, and will support HD video and
document sharing of up to 1080p during meetings, depending on your equipment and connection.
Thanks to enhanced audio and video technology, all users can experience high quality video. The
following lists the resolutions supported by different platforms (BlueJeans, 2021):
• BlueJeans App/Rooms: video content Resolutions up to 1080p
• BlueJeans Mobile App: video content Resolutions up 360p (for Android devices) & 480p
(for iOS devices)
• Chrome WebRTC: video content resolutions up to 1080p.
Criteria 2: Moderative features and roles
For the criteria requirements of the Moderative features and roles, the Bluejeans does not
contain all the features. A BlueJeans session’s host or leader is known as a moderator. The host
control allows you to mute and unmute all attendees as well as turn off someone’s video. Attendees
can turn off their own personal cameras and microphones, though (North Island College, 2020) .
Record Session available only to moderators, Moderators can start and stop recording at any
time during a session. Moderators have a few other controls under the settings related to muting
all participants upon entry, locking meeting and changing video layouts for everyone (People View,
Speaker View and Gallery View) (North Island College, 2020)
The moderator does not have the ability to remove a person at will during a meeting, as a
password must be entered before joining the meeting. But moderators can disable the ability to use
the Attendee Passcode feature (Bluejeans, 2021). As same as removing other features for attendees.
Criteria 3: Max capacity of user 500 people
BlueJeans’ Standard plan This tier supports up to 100 participants, and meetings can last as
long as you want. The Pro plan increases the participant head count to 150. Next up is BlueJeans
Enterprise, Enterprise ups the meeting participants to 200. But the BlueJeans Enterprise Plus plan
lets you customize the service to your needs with additional options and add-ons. However, you
must contact the company to get a quote for this custom tier, which means you may increase the
max user capacity. So for now, if not customize the max user capacity is Enterprise plan which is
200 users (PCMag, 2022b).
Criteria 4: Flexibility/Accessibility
For criteria Flexibility/Accessibility, BlueJeans is available for almost all platforms, including
Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. Perhaps this wide platform support is what makes
BlueJeans the preferred choice for many users. For the best BlueJeans experience, BlueJeans App
Operating Systems Requirements list below (Bluejeans, 2022):

• BlueJeans for iPhone require iOS 10.0 and later
Criteria 5: Easily share information
Bluejeans is not very good at sharing information, it miss interactive model, but sharing
screens, group discussion rooms and online phone calls are available.
• Screen sharing: The Bluejeans screen sharing is wireless screen sharing features, you can
show off your laptop screen anywhere in the conference room (Carter, 2022).
• Breakout Sessions: BlueJeans allows meeting Moderators to create separate rooms and
move participants in and out of them as needed. This allows training instructors to create
separate, temporary work sessions as part of their virtual classroom curriculum (Bluejeans,
2022b).
• Live call chat: anyone attending a meeting can chat. BlueJeans allow you to chat with all
participants or just one. Messages can be sent anytime participants are connected to the
meeting, including before the moderator has joined (Bluejeans, 2021b).
Evaluation
Microsoft Teams:
Microsoft Teams can meet most of the criteria without any issues. It can provide
a smooth and consistent 1080p video conferencing resolution due to its AI-based video
optimizations and Teams’ automatic switching to mobile data network. This will meet
and surpass the HD video requirement.
While its moderative features and roles are not as robust as Google Meet, it still
can be used to achieve a well-moderated online workspace. Additionally, meetings can
have a waiting room to allow specific individuals into the meeting and prevent
unexpected troubles. The given moderation features are enough to fulfill the
requirement.
Currently, Teams allows for 300 people in one meeting which is higher than
Google Meet, Intermedia AnyMeeting and BlueJeans Virtual Meetings but falls short of
500 people requirement.
The software is also very accessible as it can be accessed and downloaded on a
Windows 7 or later machine, macOS X 10.10 later computer, and Linux distributions. It
also supports two to four previous major versions of Android and iOS along with access
through a web browser. This will allow most people with any machine to access a
meeting on Microsoft Teams.
Lastly, Microsoft Teams makes it easy to share information in a comprehensive
method through a live chat, breakout rooms or screen sharing along with a basic
interactive mode.
Google Meet:
Google Meet can also meet most of the given requirements but falls short in the
maximum capacity of participants.
The video conference service can achieve a maximum resolution of 720p but that
is dependent upon the hardware which the user is using. Thus, it can meet the HD
video requirement but may require newer hardware.
Meet also contains a robust set of moderation features and tools which will allow
for a granular control over specific items. This will allow moderators to tailor the meeting
to however they want which will adequately fulfill the moderation requirement.
The service is unable to meet the 500 maximum participants requirement as it
can only allow 100 participants if you are not a subscriber of G Suite. If you are
subscriber, then the limit increases to 250.
Since Google Meet is primarily accessed through a website, it can used on any
hardware that supports a web browser. Therefore, it is a very accessible service that
can be used by anyone.
Meet allows for easy information sharing through its breakout rooms, live chat
and screensharing. However, it does not have any interactive features to go through the
screen share material.
Intermedia AnyMeetings:
Intermedia AnyMeeting fails to meet majority of the given requirements and thus,
should not be considered as an option.
The video conference software can reach 720p but that comes with a limitation of
having only 30 cameras activated in one meeting. However, this is also dependent on
the hardware. Therefore, it does fulfill the HD video requirement but falls short of a
developed robust system to provide 720p for 500 participants at once.
AnyMeeting also fails to meet the 500 maximum user capacity requirement. The
Enterprise tier has a maximum capacity of 200 participants which falls short of the
requirement.
The software is also much less accessible compared to the other solutions
because Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer web browsers are not supported for
software use. Such a restriction could potentially limit the number of users for a
meeting. Hence, the software does not properly fulfill the accessibility requirement.
Intermedia AnyMeeting includes an annotation and a whiteboard feature to allow
for greater interactivity in the meeting. The software also includes a screen share and
multi-screen sharing feature. Therefore, AnyMeeting can fulfill the easily share
information requirement.
BlueJeans Virtual Meetings:
Much like Intermedia AnyMeeting, BlueJeans Virtual Meetings fails to fulfill
majority of the requirements and hence, should not be considered as an option.
BlueJeans can output up to 1080p however, that is limited to a computer. Its
mobile app only supports up to 360p and 480p which falls short of 720p resolution.
Therefore, BlueJeans can partially fulfill the requirement depending which device is
being used.
The software’s moderation does not contain all the necessary features that are
found in other solutions. Some basic features are included but, moderators cannot
directly remove a participant from a meeting.
BlueJans highest tier can only support 200 people in a single meeting which is
short of the 500 maximum participants requirement.
The software’s accessibility is similar to intermedia’s AnyMeeting which makes
the software much less accessible compared to Google’s Meet or Microsoft’s Teams.
Thus, it could serve as a limitation for the number of users that can participate in a
meeting.
BlueJeans’ method of sharing information is very basic and does not include an
interactive mode which makes the software similar to Google Meet. Therefore, it does
not fulfill the last criteria requirement.
