According to our text, it states “Impasses occurs when the parties are not able to move further toward settlement. This usually occurs because one party is demanding more than the other will offer. Sometimes a third party, such as a mediator, can resolve an impasse. If the impression is not resolved, the union may call work stoppage or strike. (Dressler, 497)Mediation is a neutral third party tries to assist the principle in reaching an agreement. (Dressler 497)

How does mediation work? the mediator meets with all the parties and to discuss where each stands.

A strike is a withdrawal of labor. A strike usually takes place within a labor dispute. There are different types of strike

Economic Strike- regarding pay, wages, benefits, and other employee incentives.

Unfair Labor Practices Strike- going against illegal conduct from an employer

Wildcat Strike- unofficial strike by union workers, not approved by employer

Sympathy Strike- implies to one union supporting other unions strike (Dressler,497)

For example, of impress would be an employee is hurt on the job, and sometimes they need a third person to help them resolve their medical issuers, pay, and time off from work. The boss is not able to move forward with a way of handle all for the request that was made. They need a mediator who can help them resolve the issues at hand. Arbitration is the most effective third-party invention because arbitration can help solve the issue. To keep the employee, all three parties must conclude.

15-1. Why do employees join unions? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being a union member?

Today, over 14 million U.S. workers belong to unions-about 11% of the total number of men and women working in America-and another 1.5 million work in places covered by union agreements but do not report being union members. (Dessler, 2017) Most employees join unions for the benefits that come along with it. It may be an increase in pay and better benefits or even job security and protection. The advantages that come with being a union member are that you usually have them incase your job is in jeopardy and you are at risk of being terminated or fired. They also are there to negotiate on your behalf in cases of pay and benefit and the conditions to work. Being about of the union gives the employee protection against situations that could affect the employee both negatively and positively. If the employee decides to file a grievance the union will then step in and make sure the employee is being treated fairly and will have the best for the employee come out of the situation. The disadvantages that come with being part of a union is that the power and the control the union holds. If something does not go as planned or meet the unions expectations, lockouts or strikes can occur and will affect everyone in a negative way. The lockout can prohibit the employee from working and getting paid (Dessler, 2017)
