Go to the Newsroom

https://www.eeoc.gov/newsroom/search

on the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s (EEOC) website and review cases regarding diversity. In the search box under Browse through Press Releases from EEOC, type diversity and review three of the results from your search.

List the three cases you reviewed.

Propose three ways an organization can increase employee diversity and how these methods will support diversity initiatives in your current or future organization.

After reading a few of your classmates’ posts, reply to those from whom you learned something new or posts to which you have something constructive to add. For example:

Discuss what you learned.

Ask probing questions or seek clarification.

Explain why you agree or disagree with your classmate’s main points, assertions, assumptions, or conclusions.

Suggest research strategies or specific resources on the topic.

You must complete one original post and at least one reply to a classmate. Join the discussion early and post often.

Hey Class

Hope everyone is having a wonderful week!

List the three cases you reviewed.

The three cases I reviewed were the EEOC adding gender X marker to voluntary questions during charge intake process, EEOC holding a hearing on race, sex, and national origin discrimination in construction and Sole Miami to pay $99,000 to Settle EEOC Religious Discrimination Lawsuit. The first one adding the gender X marker for charge intake processes is so important. EEOC Chair Charlotte A. Burrows stated, “During Pride Month, it is especially important to make clear that in advancing the EEOC’s mission to prevent and remedy employment discrimination, we must serve all workers, including those who do not identify as exclusively male or female. Our public-facing charge forms now make clear that we respect that diversity (EEOC, 2022).” Secondly, when it comes to the construction sector there has been a big gap in diversity with women and workers of color. The EEOC hosted a meeting that was used to examine discrimination based on race, national origin, and sex in construction and potential solutions they can use to increase diversity. Finally the third article was about how a resort hotel refused to accommodate a seventh-day adventist employee. The terminated room attendant was payed $99,000 for being fired immediately after missing a Saturday off work. She had previously had 10 months of work and had every Saturday off but the company had switched managers and she missed the Saturday she was scheduled and was immediately fired. Other employees who had missed work multiple times for non-religious reasons were given multiple warnings prior to being terminated. This clearly shows a discrimnation based on religious reasons and is protected under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Propose three ways an organization can increase employee diversity and how these methods will support diversity initiatives in your current or future organization.

The first proposed method would be proper gender-neutral language on all job descriptions. Although it might seem like a small thing it can be a very important thing that is often overlooked. Using gender-neutral language ensures a fair hiring process.

Secondly, have guest speakers from the D&I community. During your HR workshops inviting an expert from the D&I community could be a great way to build diversity. They will give helpful insights on diversity and it can help shape the company on ramping up diversity efforts.

Lastly, your company website can tell a lot about your company. Check the stock photos you use to represent your company and if they are inclusive of all walks of life. Candidate can interpret a non-diverse interface as a sign of non-inclusive work culture.

Happy Week 2 Classmates,

List the three cases you reviewed.

Hackensack Meridian Health was sued based on discrimination violations due to the employee’s religious beliefs. When the manager learned the employee was catholic, he regularly participated in abusive behavior towards the employee, including regular belittling and screaming at him and ridiculing him for his work in front of others. (EEOC, 1) According to the EEOC, The company was aware of the harassment but did not act to prevent the harassment or take action according to the EEOC. (1) Hackensack violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on religion. (EEOC, 1) Performance Food Group was sued due to a violation of sex discrimination. (EEOC, 2) They consistently overlooked women who applied for typical male-dominated roles. The suit also alleged that a woman was denied a management role due to her sex. (EEOC, 2) Employees at La Cantera Resort and Spa alleged that new managers imposed strict policies stating they could not speak Spanish at the resort. Employees were subjected to verbal abuse and harassment. When employees spoke out about the treatment, demotions and firing ensued. Managers retaliated against employees and violated their rights of employees. (EEOC, 3)

Propose three ways an organization can increase employee diversity and how these methods will support diversity initiatives in your current or future organization.

According to Rosemary Hays-Thomas, “Chrobot – Mason developed three steps for multicultural competence for management in the workplace.

The steps include:

Increasing awareness (the awareness of how one’s values and actions can impact the workplace).

Developing Behavioral and Coping Skills (monitoring one’s behavior (what you say and do)

Action Planning (Maintaining a diverse workplace and eliminating biases).” (4)

I believe any diversity planning must include individuals who are willing to have conversations that may be uncomfortable and who are eager to view different perspectives from their own. I believe these steps are necessary for successful diversity training.
