First Crusade Book Assignment
A pivotal event in world history was the First Crusade (1095-1099). With the conquest of
Jerusalem, Europeans are brought into direct contact with Arab, Byzantine, and Asian cultures
And created in Europe itself a new sense of a common identity and a shared cultural
achievement. It also raises troubling and important historical and humanistic questions about
the place of religious violence in the development of Western and world history.1
Jerusalem, was and is the most disputed spiritual and geographic spot on earth. Middle Age
religion, both Christianity and Islam were deeply “rooted in ritual practice, historical memory,
and geographic location.”2 The First Crusade had profound transformative effects on
Christianity, Islam, politics and culture in the East and West.

above questions. You may also use other secondary/primary sources.

spaced and Chicago style footnotes.
