AACN Essentials Summary
The Baccalaureate Essentials Tool Kit’s goal is to equip teachers with materials and
examples to help them execute the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional
Nursing Practice (2008). The tool kit includes integrated learning methodologies, program
enhancement opportunities, and resources to help faculty integrate the Baccalaureate Essentials
into the nursing curriculum.
Essential I
The importance of a liberal education and how it improves patient care are discussed in
Baccalaureate Essential I. A well-rounded education that incorporates science, math, and the fine
arts fosters the growth of a learning environment that is critical to professional nursing practice
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). The ability to think critically, understand,
sympathize, and empathize with patients, as well as the ability to incorporate patients’ mental,
cultural, and spiritual statuses into an assessment and care plan, will provide greater quality of
care and a better patient outcome. At a community college, I complete Essential I of my
education. English, arithmetic, weight training, sociology, public speaking, and biology were
among the classes I took there. Leadership, Public Health, and Nursing Research, as well as
Disaster Management, were among the reaming courses taken at West Coast University (WCU).
Essential II
Baccalaureate Essential II covers leadership, quality improvement, and patient safety
knowledge and abilities. These characteristics are required for providing high-quality health care.
Patient safety “aims to prevent and decrease risks, errors, and harm that occur to patients during
the provision of health care,” according to the World Health Organization (World Health
Organization, 2019). “Knowledge and skills in leadership are required that emphasize ethical and

critical decision making, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships, using
mutually respectful communication and collaboration within interprofessional teams, care
coordination, delegation, and developing conflict resolution strategies,” according to the report
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, pg. 13, 2008). A well-run organization will be
ensured by a competent and skilled leader. I completed Essential II of my education by assuring
my patients’ safety. I always ensured to complete a room safety check, practiced adequate hand
hygiene, and donned and doffed PPE appropriately before leaving my patient’s room.
Essential III
Essential III is all about professional nursing practice and how it is based on the
application of current evidence. The system on which nursing care is built emphasizes the
importance of evidence-based practice. Patient outcomes are based on health-care sector research
and are related to ideal outcomes. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) claims that “Data-based
practice models provide a systematic procedure for the evaluation and implementation of
scientific evidence concerning practice concerns,” according to the American Association of
Colleges of Nursing. The nurse’s role is to interpret, execute, and evaluate evidence-based
practice in order to provide patients with effective and safe care. I achieved Essential III by
implementing evidence-based practice into the care I deliver to my patients, with appropriate
hand hygiene being the most crucial. Donning and doffing of personal protection equipment is
another evidence-based strategy that I do.
Essential IV
When it comes to nursing skills and patient care education, Nursing Essential IV
highlights the necessity for technology. The fourth essential states of nursing “Graduates must
have a basic understanding of technical abilities, such as computer use and the deployment of

patient care technology including monitors, data collection devices, and other technological aids
for patient care interventions. Furthermore, baccalaureate graduates must be capable of using
information technology systems, such as decision support systems, to acquire evidence to guide
practice” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008, pg. 17). In the health-care
industry, the electronic medication administration record (eMAR) is the most extensively utilized
technology tool. During my clinical rotations, I met Essential IV. I used the hospital’s eMAR
system for every clinical rotation. I utilized it to check prescriptions, retrieve patient lab and
diagnostic study results, and evaluate the patient’s medical history.
Essential V
Healthcare policies, including as financial and regulatory policies, that directly or
indirectly influence the character and function of the healthcare system, are significant concerns
in professional nursing practice, according to Essential V. Policies “shape responses to concerns
of fairness, access, cost, and social justice in health care at the organizational, local, national, and
global levels” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). Health-care policies, such
as the Affordable Care Act, help to ensure health-care equality, which includes issues of equity,
access, cost, and social justice within the healthcare system. During both theory lectures and
clinical rotations, I encountered Essential V. The focus of Public Health was on community care.
Throughout my clinical rotation, I worked with people of many colors, religions, and
socioeconomic backgrounds. I’ve looked after the impoverished who didn’t have health insurance
as well as people from higher socioeconomic strata who did. I gave each patient the same
attention and provided the finest care available.

Essential VI
Essential VI addresses communication and teamwork among healthcare practitioners. In
the health-care system, communication and teamwork are essential for providing high-quality
and safe patient care. When communication and collaboration are properly used in
interdepartmental situations, appropriate care guidelines are followed. Because of the many
knowledge bases that each practice builds upon, multiple concerns can be addressed at the same
time. Furthermore, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2008) claims that
“interprofessional education maximizes opportunity for the development of respect and trust for
other members of the healthcare team” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). To
offer best health care, health care workers must establish mutual respect and trust. During my
clinical rotation, I met Essential VI through talking and cooperating with members of an
interdisciplinary health care team. I communicated with respiratory, physical, and occupational
therapists, as well as laboratory, radiology, and pharmaceutical team members.
Essential VII
The relevance of health promotion and disease prevention at the individual and
population level is discussed in Nursing Essential VII. Health promotion and illness prevention
are critical because they improve individual and population health while lowering health-care
costs. The United States is currently dealing with a growing population as well as a significant
lack of health-care personnel. Health promotion and illness prevention will aid in reducing the
number of patients seen by health care providers on a daily basis. Essential VII encompasses the
principles of health promotion as well as disease and injury prevention for both people and
populations, both of which are necessary to promote the population’s total health (American
Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). These ideas are significant because they reduce the

pressure on health-care workers. During every clinical rotation and volunteer opportunity, I
encountered Essential VII. During my Public Health clinical rotation, I volunteered at health fairs
and public service centers. In addition, I provided education to my patients on their medications,
major complaint, medical condition, and how to avoid future hospitalizations.
Essential VIII
The cornerstone for Essential VIII is professionalism, as well as the fundamental
principles of benevolence, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice. These ideas are
in line with nursing’s basic values, such as advocacy, therapeutic dialogue, and delivering safe
patient care. “Inherent in professional practice is an understanding of the historical, legal, and
contemporary context of nursing practice” according to the AACN. Professionalism is defined as
“the consistent demonstration of core values by nurses working with other professionals to
achieve optimal health and wellness outcomes in patients, families, and communities by wisely
applying principles of altruism, excellence, caring, ethics, respect, communication, and
accountability to achieve optimal health and wellness outcomes in patients, families, and
communities” (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). Nurses that exemplify
these ideals may give their patients with the best possible care. Every clinical shift, I encountered
Essential VIII. I stood up for my patients and upheld the highest standards of autonomy and
safety for them. Prior to leaving my patient, I made sure the room was safe, that correct hand
hygiene was followed, and that proper instruction was given.
Essential IX
Essential IX explains why a baccalaureate-degreed nurse is qualified to work with
patients. Evidence-based practice, safe patient care, patient autonomy, advocacy, and health and

wellness promotion are among the skills that prepare a baccalaureate-graduate nurse to care for
patients efficiently and effectively. Essential IX “includes practice focused outcomes that
integrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes delineated in Essentials I VIII into the nursing care
of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in a variety of settings”
(American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2008). A baccalaureate nursing program provides
nurses with the knowledge and skills they need to think critically in order to offer safer and more
efficient patient care. Essential IX was introduced to me in each theory lecture and during my
clinical rotations. As previously said, I delivered care with compassion and kindness, taking into
account cultural and religious views, advocating for each of my patients, and ensuring safe
patient care. Essential IX was introduced to me in each theory lecture and during my clinical
rotations. I also followed the facility’s regulations and procedures while providing care using
evidence-based techniques. Most significantly, I was able to educate my patients in the hopes of
avoiding readmission.
